Sally was born on February 16, 1943 in Pueblo, CO as the first daughter of the late Van and Velma Zupon Douglass. She was raised on a cattle ranch in Rye, CO. She rode a school bus to a country school where the first, second and third grades were all together in one room. Sally graduated from East High School in Pueblo, CO and received an Associate in Arts degree from Stephens College in Columbia, MO in 1963. She continued her studies at the University of Colorado where she met her husband, Robert H. "Bob" Shapiro. They were married on April 11, 1971.
In her early working years, Sally was a technical secretary for Ball Brothers Research Corporation and the University of Colorado in Boulder. After moving to Harrisonburg in 1980, she served on the Harrisonburg Planning Commission and was secretary to the Harrisonburg Board of Realtors. In 1989, Sally became an Advisor to the United States Naval Academy Women's Club and also an active member of the United States Naval Academy Garden Club when Bob served as Academic Dean and Provost at the United States Naval Academy. Besides Colorado, Harrisonburg and Annapolis, Sally and Bob lived in Copenhagen Denmark.
Bob preceded her in death on August 21, 2004. Sally is survived by her beloved sister Marilyn (Joe), her nephews Joevan and John, three step-sons, Eric, Daniel, Adam (Naomi) and three step-granddaughters, Rachel, Eliana and Sophie.
A memorial service will be held at Lindsey Funeral Home in downtown Harrisonburg on Tuesday, March 7th at 7pm. Private interment will be at the United
States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Anicira Veterinary Center at 1992 Medical Avenue in Harrisonburg.
