Kings County resident Serafin Muñoz, 70, passed away November 29, 2021 of natural causes. He lived on a ranch most of his life before finding a home in Hanford, Ca. He was a ranch laborer and his duties included: mechanic, truck driver, forklift operator and shop maintenance. He once said the only thing he didn’t get to do was pilot the plane the owners had on the property.
Serafin is preceded in death by his parents, Santos and Hilaria Muñoz, siblings Nieves and Remedios and his nephew Arturo.
He is survived by his wife Consuelo Muñoz, his sons Edward (Maria Cerda), Javier (Willetta Jo) and Rene (Karina); grandchildren Rebekah and Richard; siblings Lupe Guzman (Reyes), Lucina Myers (Bruce), and Ernesto Muñoz (Dorie). He will be remembered and missed by his many nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces, as well as cousins and friends whose lives he touched. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Adela Muñoz.
Serafin was born in San Gregorio, Guanajuato, Mexico on October 8th, 1951. After his father was able to bring the family to Kettleman City, California, Serafin finished his high school education in Avenal, CA. On April 24th, 1976, he married Consuelo Rivera and had their first son in May of 1977. In May of 1978 came the birth of his second son and in July 1979 the birth of his third son. While living on the ranch he would grow a garden that consisted of corn, pumpkins, watermelons, cucumbers, chilis, tomatillos and a small area for strawberries. He loved tinkering with his cars and teaching his sons how to maintain them amongst other things. He was a member of the Sociedad Guadalupana at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church.
Serafin was a conversation starter and storyteller. He would talk to whoever would listen. He would talk for hours with his brother Remedios or his dad Santos. He liked to read and had a collection of books on various topics. When he would find a new book to buy he would tell his wife, this is the last one, that is until he found another book that interested him.
He had a 4-legged shadow and protector, one of the family dogs, Cujo. She would follow him where ever he went and would wait by the front door while he was in dialysis. She would guard him while he slept, barking at anyone she thought would harm him.
Most recently Serafin loved spending time with his grandchildren, as they celebrated special occasions, picked fruit from his trees, played restaurant or simply listen to their laughter as they ran around in the backyard chasing the dogs.
2021 was a rough year, Serafin was in and out of the hospital on several occasions. The pandemic kept family away. The death of his older brother in January took a toll, the death of his dad took a greater toll. His wife and sons were able to honor his last wish of being able to bring him home for his remaining days. With his wife by his side he peacefully passed away at 1:45 am around the same time his father had passed away 20 days earlier.
On behalf of Serafin’s sons, they would like to thank their mother for being by his side for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, for loving him and cherishing him.
“One of the greatest things a father can do for his children is to love their mother.” - Howard W. Hunter.
