Donald was raised in Hanford and attended Youd-Cross Creek Elementary School, before moving to Seaside with his family during his freshman year. Upon returning to Hanford as a teenager, he began working to help support his family, but would later earn his GED during his time in the Army. Donald served in the US Army, being drafted in May 1960. He was stationed in Germany and spoke often of the time he spent there.
As a young man, Donald hauled hay for Rodriguez Hay and then became a hod-carrier, working for local companies before joining Bratton Masonry, where he worked for many years. Donald was a member of The Laborer’s International Union of North America for over 50 years. In 1994, he was injured in an industrial accident which caused him to lose his sight. Although he was no longer able to work or do many of the things he had enjoyed, he was never bitter and made the best of the situation. He stayed kind and appreciated his family’s care and support, going along with whatever circumstances were presented to him.
Donald and his wife, Bobbie Jo, were together for more than 50 years. Together, they had one daughter, Sheila Dawn and two grandchildren. Over the years, the family enjoyed fishing trips, visits to their houseboat, and trips to the coast. Donald took great interest in his grandchildren and their activities. He was a kind, generous, and loving dad and papa who will be missed by his family.
Donald is survived by his daughter, Sheila (Shawn) O’Sullivan of Hanford, grandchildren Brianna and Jonathon “Bubba” O’Sullivan of Hanford, brothers Ernie of Hanford and Gary of North Fork as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Iris Gilbert, infant sister, Ellen, and brothers, Zeke, Richard, and Ronnie.
The family would like to thank his caregivers, Rosie, Brenda and Dana, who provided much friendship and support to him.
A private service will be held at the Hanford Cemetery.
