Philip was a native of Hampton, Virginia and graduated from Hampton High School where he was captain of the football team and named all-state in his junior and senior years. He received a football scholarship and attended Wofford College as a proud terrier where he received a bachelor's degree in economics.
After college he served in the Navy and then settled into a 39 year career as a ship designer at Newport News Shipbuilding while also obtaining his real estate license.
Philip married the love of his life, Dorothy, in 1957. They shared 60 wonderful years of marriage and raised 5 children. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and loved anything water or sports related. His wit, smile, and laugh would light up any room and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy; parents, Stuart & Elizabeth Gibson; brothers Stuart Jr., Muggy, and Donnie; sisters Pat, Joan, and Jean; daughter Rose, and daughter-in-law Sharon.
He is survived by his children, Philip Gibson, Jr., Donnie Gibson (Lisa), Alan Gibson, and Becky Bolte (Steve) and grandchildren - Julia (Aaron), Philip, Yvonne, Mary, Nathan, Athena, Luke, Liese, Joshua, & Daphne.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 9 at 1:00 pm at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Ave, Hampton, VA 23666. A celebration of life will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
