Michael Paul Murphy, 66 passed away at Sentara CarePlex Hospital in Hampton, VA on January 4, 2018. Michael was born February 4, 1951 in Columbus, NE. He spent most of his childhood in Nebraska assisting his dad with various odd jobs. At the age of 14, his parents moved to Watertown, SD where he later graduated high school. In 1971, Michael joined the Navy and served in the Vietnam War. While in the Navy, Michael and his family lived coast to coast with a brief stint of recruiting duty in Watertown, SD. Michael then moved his family to Hampton, VA where he was able to finish his Naval Career serving upon various vessels stationed at the Norfolk Naval Base. Michael retired from Naval service after 21 years as a Chief Warrant Officer. He then began his career as a Valve Engineer working at various nuclear power plants across the United States. Michael enjoyed traveling and cheering for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Helen Murphy and his sister, Janet Wadsworth. He is survived by his three children, Troy Murphy and his wife Arel of Charlotte, NC, Kristin Skwirut and her husband Jeremy of Hampton, VA, and Anthony Murphy and his wife Barbara of Torrance, CA; three grandchildren, Cameran, Colin and Callan; and siblings, Mary Tieszen and her husband Reed of Canistota, SD, Barbara Fischer and her husband Greg of Lake City, SD, James Murphy and his wife Barbara of South Jordan, UT, and Julie Wik and her husband David of Monticello, MN. Other surviving
members include his ex-wife, Connie Murphy of Hampton, VA; his brother-in-law, Rick Wadsworth of Hayti, SD; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to those mentioned, there were many extended family members and friends dear to his heart.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be held 1:00 pm Thursday, January 18, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 512 Buckroe Avenue, Hampton, VA. A reception will follow in Cordier Hall at the church. Interment will take place at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
