Dr. Georgia Mae Wheeler, age 74, passed away Friday, July 13, 2012 at her home surrounded by loving family members. She was born in Pinehurst, NC, was raised in the Bronx, NY, and had most recently been a resident of Hampton.
After a career spanning 36 years, she retired in 1995 from the Department of Employment in New York City, NY. In her most recent years, she worked with AmeriCorps Vista for four years with “Project Now” at Cornerstone Worship Center International, where she attended service. At “Project Now”, she focused on providing services to senior adults, like transportation for appointments and developed various ministries such as the free exercise program, Grandparent’s Luncheon, and coordinated Toys for Tots. In the Bronx, NY, she was a member of St. Peter’s Pentecostal Church under her father, the Late Bishop Thetie B. Jackson, Pastor/Founder.
Surviving members of her family include her husband of fifty-two years, Barrian Wheeler; daughters, Simone McRae, Kim Wheeler, Deirdre Wheeler, and Angela Wheeler-Thomas; grandchildren, Clifton “Tyrell” Tuck, Jeanine McRae, Asia Jordan, Alyscia Jordan, Marcus Lewis, and Kevin McRae; one great grandchild, Kairell Tuck; brothers Emmitt, Darrell, and David Jackson.
The family will receive friends Saturday, July 21, 2012, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A service, at 5:00 pm, celebrating Georgia’s life will be held following the visitation. Interment will be held privately.
