TSEGA, Edemariam passed away Jan 1, 2018, at home, in his 80th year. Born and raised in Gondar, Ethiopia, he was educated at Addis Ababa, McGill and Lund Universities, and the London School of Tropical Medicine. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, and practiced and taught General Internal Medicine for almost 23 years in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with a subspecialty in gastroenterology and research focus on liver diseases in Ethiopia. He was Professor of Medicine, and for a time Dean, of the medical faculty of Addis Ababa University. He was a general internist from 1994 for 7 years in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland, and from 2001 until retirement in 2014 with Hamilton Health Sciences/ McMaster University, retiring as Professor Emeritus. He was predeceased by his parents and 5 siblings, and is survived by sisters Tiruwork (Wodajie), Zena, and Mare(Worku) and cousin Alemante (Askale), and many other cousins, nephews and nieces. He was the beloved husband for 47 years of Frances Lester, and dear father of Aida (David), Naomi, Yohannes and Yodit, and grandfather of Rahel. Visitation will take place at Cresmount Funeral Home, 322 Fennell Ave. East, Hamilton, on Friday Jan 5, 2018, from 3 to 8 pm, with the funeral at Holy Trinity Ethiopian Orthodox Church, 420 Aberdeen Ave., Hamilton, on Saturday Jan 6, at 8 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Edemariam’s memory to Canadian Blood Services, the Canadian Cancer Society, or to an Ethiopian charity of your choice. The whole family take this opportunity to express our deep gratitude to all physicians, nursing staff, ambulance personnel and all others who cared for Edemariam so expertly and kindly through a long illness.
