It is with great sadness we announce that Viola Platt, age 91, passed away peacefully on September 30th at the Halifax Infirmary (Abbie J. Lane Memorial Building). We thank the medical and health care professionals at the hospital for providing physical and spiritual comfort in her final days.
Viola leaves behind her devoted husband of 66 years, John, as well as her loving daughters Shelley and Brenda, sons-in-law Mark and Steve, grandchildren John and Elizabeth, and nieces Leslie, Marni, Lori and Terri. Viola leaves behind countless relatives, friends and neighbours from when she lived in Manitoba, Nova Scotia and British Columbia.
We fondly remember the sharp wit and quiet playfulness of Vi (Mom, Nana Vi). We cherish the memories of the time she shared with us: watching baseball games; travelling across Canada many times and trips abroad; sipping tea under the apple tree in the garden; preparing meals and baking; teaching us to knit and sew; and playing leapfrog on the lawn or sledding in the winter.
Viola was born on a farm in southern Manitoba to the late Robert and Fridný Beech. One of five children, she learned to be resourceful and developed a strong work ethic. Viola carried these traits throughout her life, both professionally as a teacher and bookkeeper and privately as a mother, homemaker, volunteer, and devout Christian. She showed dedication, respect and kindness to all those around her, and always gave more than she asked.
As per her wishes, Viola will be cremated and buried with the remains of her husband John upon his death and cremation. A private celebration with family and close friends will be held at a later date. Donations in Viola’s memory may be sent to Alzheimer Society of Canada.
