Verna Mary Munroe

Munroe, Verna Mary - Died peacefully at home on August 20, 2013. Born in Windsor, N.S. on July 9, 1934, Verna was the daughter of the late George and Marion (Northup) Wellwood. She is pre-deceased by her husband the Very Reverend J. Austin Munroe and brother Earl Wellwood and survived by her daughter Cathy and son-in-law Serge Choquette, son Craig and daughter-in-law Liz Hanlon; grandchildren Samantha and Alexa, step grandchildren Stephanie, Marylaine, Lauren and Riley; great grandchildren Jason and Sarah; as well as her sister-in-law Annabelle Wellwood. Verna grew up in Rawdon Gold Mines, N.S., studied at the N.S Normal College and worked as a teacher as a young adult. She met Austin Munroe when he was a newly ordained Anglican Minister serving in the parish of Rawdon and they married in 1955. During their married life they lived in the parishes of Rawdon, Ayleford-Berwick, Wolfville, Lunenburg, and Halifax where Austin was Dean at All Saints Cathedral for 17 years and where they spent their retirement years. Throughout her life Verna was an active contributor to the community and to the church. She will be remembered as a true partner with Austin in the church ministry, as a wonderful mother and grandmother, as a friend to many and for her tireless efforts on behalf of the many charities that she supported over the years. Of particular note in her later years was her work on behalf of the Phoenix Youth Programs, APSEA, the Meals on Wheels Program and the Interfaith Council. Verna's heart and home were open to everyone and her house was a second home to youth wherever she lived. The family will receive visitors at the Cathedral Church of All Saints at 1330 Martello St. (formally Tower Rd.) Sunday August 25 from 4 - 7 pm. A celebration of Verna’s life will be held on Monday August 26 at 11 am in the Cathedral Church of All Saints at followed by an interment in the Cathedral Columbarium and reception in The Great Hall. The family would like to express their appreciation to the many individuals who provided medical and other care over the past number of years, in particular to the many VON and home support caregivers whose compassion and devotion was truly evident.
