Tim (Timothy William) Hill, K.C., passed away on May 8, 2023, at home surrounded by family after a lengthy struggle with the big “C”.
Tim was born in Worcester England on August 16, 1953, and was the son of the late William Douglas Hill, of Worcester England, and the late Joyce Julia Cook (nee Jenkins) of Halifax, Nova Scotia. He is survived by his children Samuel Hill (Elizabeth), and Alice Kate Hill (Alyssa), his grandson Hunter Knee, siblings and their life partners, sister Julya May Hill (Johnnie), brother Terry Hill (Dee, after 50 years a sister also), brother Andy Hill (Pat), Richard Hadley (none apparent), and mother of his children, Sheila Hirtle. Tim was a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Tim was educated at the Worcester Royal Grammar School for Boys. As a result, he dropped out of school at the age of 15 in pursuit of the opposite gender.
Tim served in the Queen’s Own Hussars of the British Army. Following that, he did a stint selling cars and trained and became a bookmaker (legal in England).
Tim immigrated to Nova Scotia in August 1979 with $20 dollars in his pocket. Upon his demise he had at least doubled that.
In Canada Tim worked first for Interbake Foods before putting himself through university working as a security guard. He studied at both St. Mary’s University and Dalhousie Law School. Tim was president of both the St. Mary’s University Students’ Association and Dalhousie Student Union (apparently the only person to ever hold both posts).
Tim graduated from Dalhousie Law School in 1985. During his career he was a partner in various law firms, was the Principal of Tim Hill Law Practice, and practiced the past 10 years at BOYNECLARKE LLP.
Tim was a member of both the NS and NL Canadian Bar Association and was included in The Best Lawyers in Canada 2014-2023 editions. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Insolvency section of the Canadian Bar Association. Tim was a past registrar of Bankruptcy from 1997-2004 and was considered an expert in the field of insolvency and bankruptcy. Tim was awarded King’s Counsel (formerly Queen’s Counsel) in 2014, a moment his mother was proud to witness.
Tim was committed to giving back to his community and over the years volunteered his time to numerous community activities including Chair of the Summer Opera Festival and Tasa Minor and Junior Hockey. He acted as president of the Glen Arbour HOA and was the Chair of the Board of Directors of St. Margaret’s Centre, a position he held for 20 years. He led the expansion of the facility, which is now considered one of the premier recreation facilities in the municipality. He received numerous awards and honors including the HRM Volunteer Award in 2014.
Tim had many interests. He loved to travel, play golf and was a history fanatic. He enjoyed playing war board games with his friends, and he was a huge fan of the opera.
Tim was a kind and humble man, and his dry wit will be forever remembered by all who knew him. Whether it be a spur of the moment joke, or a well thought out scheme, Tim’s humour was never lacking, even until the end. Above all else, Tim deeply cared about his family, his profession, and his community. He will be truly missed.
Tim’s celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 20 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Margaret’s Centre in Tantallon. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made in his name to Canadian Cancer Society.
