Barrett, Serena Alice (nee Sampson), Age 90, of Halifax passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Wednesday, April 10th in Maplestone Enhanced Care, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Born in Lower L’Ardoise, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late Wilfred J. and Nataline (Peters) Sampson. Mom was a homemaker, raising her seven children with her beloved husband Walter. Even though they lived most of their married life in Halifax, her heart was always in Cape Breton. She was a devoted member of St. John the Baptist Parish where she was a member of the choir and altar society for more than 50 years. Mom had an unwavering faith in God and a deep and abiding love for her family. If asked what her greatest accomplishment would be, without a doubt, she would say it was her family. She was well known for her love of cooking and feeding everyone who entered her home. Nothing compared to Mom’s homemade bread and chicken soup or tea biscuits and homemade jam. She loved doing needle work and had to her credit, several home made quilts all done by hand. Mom is survived by her children; Corrine (John) Cox, Elaine (Barry) Stevens, David (Denis Boisclair), Kevin (Elizabeth), Denise (Mike) Marriott & Gail (David) Julien; daughter-in-law Jackie; grandchildren Jennifer (Reg), Ryan, Brandon, Julia, Dylan, Emilie and Sophie; great grandchildren Marena and Declan; sisters Delia, Kay, Agnes, Angeline and Carol; brothers, Jules, Louis, Jack, Ambrose and Abraham. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 62 years, Walter; son, Wally; sister Irene; brothers, Angus and Charlie. Our family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the staff of Maplestone Enhanced Care, Ringdale Unit, for their exceptional care of our mother during her three years as a resident there. As well, a special thank you to the staff for their compassion shown to our family during this difficult time. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Sunday, April 14th from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm at J.A. Snow’s Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. John the Baptist Church, Purcell’s Cove Road, on Monday, April 15th at 11:00 am, Fr. Raymond Odumuko presiding. Reception to follow in the church hall. Private burial in Cape Breton at a later date. Family flowers only. Donations, in our Mother’s memory, can be made to Parkinson Canada.
