Ronald Harry Conrad

It is with the deepest of sadness we had to say goodbye to Dad “Grampy, Pup, Poppy, Gump” age 88, on July 7th at the QE2 Hospital Halifax. Born in Halifax he was the son of the late Austin and Lillian (Mitchell) Conrad. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years Theresa (Beazley) and son Ronald; brothers, Murray, Francis, Stephen, George, William and James; sisters, Alta and Stella.

Dad is survived by daughter Mary Anne Waite (Roger) Bedford; sons Michael (Karen), Arizona and Stephen (Miriam), Moncton; grandchildren Andrew, Austin, Christian, Katie, Robyn and Craig; great grandchildren Mason and Ronson; sister Sheila Finck (Allan), Bridgewater and extended family.

Dad had a 35 year career with the Halifax Fire Department joining in 1955 and retiring in 1991. During that time he served at many different houses in the city including Morris St., West St., Oxford St and Bayers Rd. Always a hard worker and wanting to provide for his family, he worked at and later owned, Marriott and Branch Mens and Boys Wear in Bayers Rd Shopping Center. After retiring from these jobs and not one to be idle, he worked part time at Sears Warehouse. In later years he filled his time mowing his lawn, doing his word searches, and shovelling his rather large driveway. Activities he continued up to last year. If you needed a helping hand, a meal or a drive, dad could be counted on to be there. He was a man of few words but a generous heart.

The family would like to thank the staff of the QE2 unit 7.2 for their caring and kindness during dad’s 6 month stay, following a femur fracture especially during Covid restrictions, when family could not be there. There are too many to name, but a special thank you to Honey.

In keeping with Dad’s wishes there will be no visitation. Due to Covid restrictions a private family funeral mass will be held Friday July 17th at Saint Ignatius Parish Bedford at 12:15. You may join the live stream service at www.saintignatius.ca Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery Lower Sackville, immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Operation Smile Canada or Souls Harbour Rescue Mission.
