Ralph Alphonse

Ralph was born in Diman, Lebanon, in 1938. He immigrated to Halifax with his family in 1953.

Ralph was a man of the world, very well spoken and charismatic, a story teller who always drew around him many dear friends whom he cherished as family. Ralph was one of the pillars of the Lebanese community in Halifax. He helped establish the foundation that led to a very successful Lebanese community.

In the early stage of his life, Ralph started a successful business when he opened his first service station, the “BIG BA” on the Bedford Highway and then the Shell station on Almon Street. He then joined the Independent Order of Foresters, where he built a successful career in the insurance industry, receiving many awards including the Golden Tree Topper. Later in life, Ralph started his own construction and rental company, which he operated until his retirement in 2016.

Ralph was a member of the Canadian Lebanon Society, to which he was elected president seven times. He also served as a member of the Halifax Multicultural Association for 20 years.

Ralph enjoyed an active life until 2012 when he suffered a stroke, which compromised his speech and mobility. With determination and the support of his loving wife, Claire, he was able to face the many challenges and continue to live a good life.

As some would say, he had it all: a brilliant mind, education, good looks, and many good friends, with whom he enjoyed much valuable, quality time.

His active life did not stop Ralph from visiting his old country every year, a country that he cherished very deeply and where he met and married Claire, the love of his life.

Ralph was predeceased by his parents, Wadia and Farah and brother Joseph. He is survived by Claire, his devoted wife of 30 years, sisters Nadia Cribb, Rose (Bob Brennan) and Marie, as well as nephews John Alphonse and Robert Cribb, and grand niece Alexandra Cribb.
