With a broken heart I announce the passing of my beloved husband and best friend, Peter Michael MacDougall. Peter was 61, born on October 1,1960, to the late Catherine (Cogan) and Lawrence MacDougall. Peter died due to complications following a bone marrow transplant that he received in February 2022.
Forever loved, Peter is survived by his husband John Ingram.
Peter had a loving Cape Breton family and is further survived by his two sisters, Sheila (Alan) Leard, Bedford and Frances, North Sydney; four brothers, David (Sarah), Riverview NB, Jack (Karen), Fall River, Dennis, Moncton NB, and Lloyd (Sonya) Westmount NS. Peter is also survived by the Ingram family who loved him so much, father-in-law Jack and his two sisters-in law Heather (Ian) Halifax and Liz (Ron), Dartmouth. Peter was predeceased by his mother-in-law Josephine Ingram in 2020. Uncle Peter was loved and will be missed by his nieces and nephews Glen, Karen, Michael, Devin, Graham, Micheline, Sarah, Brogan, Joe and Lexi as well as several grand nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Memorial High, Peter pursued higher education but soon realized his true calling and graduated from the Victoria General Hospital as a Registered Nurse in 1984.
Peter was a lifelong learner; following graduation from VGH School of Nursing, Peter obtained a BSc in Nursing from St. Francis Xavier University and a Master of Health Studies from Athabasca University.
Peter had many roles during his long and successful career. Peter started his career at the IWK, and subsequently nursed in Cape Breton and Florida before accepting his first leadership role as a Health Services Manager at the QE11 Health Sciences Centre on 2005. In that role he led clinical teams in ICU and then Thoracic Surgery and the Integrated Palliative Care Service, where he was key to the early planning for the first Hospice in Nova Scotia. Peter had a keen interest in innovation that continued throughout his career. He continued to lead and support large clinical teams and numerous health care initiatives as Health Service Director, Emergency Services and in his most recent role as Clinical Transformation Information Informatics Officer for One Person One Record, Nova Scotia Health/ IWK.
In 2012, Peter made history as the first male RN to serve as President of the College of Registered Nurses Association, Peter travelled throughout the Province in this role, meeting with nurses and reigniting pride within the nursing profession in Nova Scotia. Always willing to share the wisdom and experience he gained over the years, he encouraged nurses to see the leader in themselves as he saw it in them.
Peter had a unique ability to make everyone he worked with feel valued and acted as a mentor to many. We are better off as a result of his leadership. Peter was never one to shy away from a challenge, leaning into challenges and opportunities with confidence, compassion and his always present humour. He loved to insert a bit of Cape Breton humour as often as he could.
We would like to thank the Hematology department and the numerous beautiful souls who helped and encouraged us over the last several years, along with our amazing pharmacy team at Lawtons on Spring Garden Road. Thank You, Jennifer and Team.
A special thanks to our very dear friend Shelley Brown who was with us during this journey and guided us with encouragement and love.
A final thank you to our dear dog Angus, who always knew and could always feel both of us and reacted with unconditional love.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one of Peter’s passions, Hospice Halifax or to the Northside Harbourside Hospital Foundation.
Visitation will take place in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr. Halifax on Saturday July 16 from 5-8pm. A funeral will take place on Sunday July 17 at 2pm, which will be followed by a reception at Le Bistro by Liz on South Park St. for family and close friends, from 3:30-6pm.
