So sorry to hear of the loss of Peter. I was one of the junior officers he helped to put on the path of success in the Navy. I remember his broad smile, his gregarious approach to life and his great sense of humour. May you take solace in the memories you share! RIP Peter!

My deepest condolences on the passing of my friend Peter. He was an outstanding Naval Officer and a great friend. I trust you will keep the many happy memories you have of Peter with you and that they help you come to grips with his passing. I will keep him in my prayers.

Dear Hutt Family. Under the heading "Sometimes you have no idea what a positive influence you were": In 1975, Peter was my Training Officer aboard Saskatchewan during the 4th Phase of MARS at-sea training. He was responsible for the final shaping  (sometimes called 'last ditch attempt') of a gaggle of Cadets trying to reach their first major milestone - the Basic Watchkeeping Qualification.   We were constantly under the microscope;  pushed hard to apply correctly what went on earlier in the classroom; deprived of sleep and assessed on our performance under those conditions; yelled at; chided; and, once in a blue moon, praised. That's how the training and qualification game was played then. If you can't stand the heat... Many years later, although we did not share any postings, I met Peter again at the Stad Wardroom and we did the kind of short, cursory catch-up typically done over a beer.  Even much later after that, one day it finally hit me. Way back when, Peter was the Officer who gave us the small piece of encouragement we needed when we absolutely needed it most... after all fabricated Training Hell had broken loose on the Bridge, and we Cadets barely knew how to respond, and we were sure we had failed miserably.  He had to drive home what we'd done wrong so we could improve, but he always remembered to lift us up by letting our young minds know what we'd done right. In those days, perhaps not everyone understood the power of that seemingly small reinforcement: "That's okay, you'll get it, you're doing just fine". That's a nice memory I've carried with me for a long time. Thanks. Smooth sailing, LCdr.  

Very sorry to hear of Peter’s passing. He will certainly be missed.
My memories of him go back to the fall of 1965 when we met at HMCS Venture, the Navy’s Officer Training school in Esquimalt.
He was always very enthusiastic and positive - at a time when we were under pressure and expected to perform. Not a problem for Peter!
One of my enduring early memories was commiserating with each other on the quarterdeck of HMCS Jonquiere one sunny morning after being seasick at the start of our cadet training cruise: we mutually agreed that we could “hack the program.”
After graduation we joined chummy ships of the same squadron and saw a lot of each other, met the girls that would become our wives, double-dated, attended each other’s weddings, had children and gradually drifted apart. Nevertheless, whenever we met it was as though we had never been apart - one of the great things about naval friendships!

Peter love the water and these were taken the summer of 2020 when the Bluenose visited Chester. 

I was very sorry to hear of Peter's passing. A great officer and friend. We shared many tales and lobsters down in Secret Cove. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him. RIP . Peter.      Gord Holstead, Toney River NS.

Sorry for your loss. Peter and I sailed together during our early days in the navy, and later years I enjoyed his company and camaraderie at our luncheons. He was a good friend and will be missed.

Dear Linda, so sorry for the news. I know it's been a tough final years. From the first day we met you and Peter in Norfolk in 1985, we knew what a wonderful man he was. He had a great smile and a terrific sense of humour, and professional to the core. Stella and I feel he is now with Joe and Fran.  May God bless you and the family and bring you peace. My deepest condolences.  Peter was my first Weapons Officer and DO when I joined Athab.  He taught me a great deal and was key in my chosen path.  I also bought my first colour tv and baby car seat from him.
