Peter Ramsay Doig died peacefully on August 17, at the Halifax Infirmary, surrounded by his loving family. Peter was born on March 29, 1930, the son of Norman and Josephine Doig. A maritime golfing legend, Peter learned the game at Gorsebrook Hill at 6 years of age, caddying for his father near his boyhood home on Tower Terrace. With a natural swing, and a deep respect for the game, Peter quickly rose to prominence on the local golf scene. He won the New Brunswick – PEI – NS Junior at 16, and went on to place third in the Canadian Juniors that year. He was the first person to win each of the Nova Scotia Junior, Amateur, Mid-Amateur and Senior Championships, and a record 13 Ashburn club championships. He won the Nova Scotia Open as an amateur in 1955, beating the field of maritime golf professionals by 13 strokes. In 1988, he placed second in the Canadian Seniors Championships. Peter was an active member since the 1960’s of the Squawkers, Hookers and Slicers. A long serving director, and past President, he was honoured to be made a Life Member of Ashburn in 2013. An unfailing supporter of Dalhousie University, he received his B.A. and B.Comm., and was elected life president of the 1953 graduating class. He served as President of the Dalhousie Alumni Association, as a member of the Dalhousie Board of Governors, and in 2004 was honoured with the A. Gordon Archibald Award recognizing outstanding alumni contribution. As a member of Sigma Chi, he established deep lifelong friendships. He worked at National Sea Products for 28 years, retiring in 1993. He was a leader in the Maritime risk management community, and a recognized expert in Marine insurance. Following their retirement, Peter and Carolyn enjoyed winter holidays to Florida, and weekly skating with their regular group. Our house was filled with music. He had a passion for classical music that he shared with his older brother David, and passed along to his family. His interests and hobbies evolved over the years, with an early interest in philately and fishing, and in his later years he developed his natural talent for photography. He was an avid sports fan, with a particular fondness for the Montreal Canadiens (a natural rivalry with his Maple Leaf loving brother John). But his real calling was as a loving husband, great dad, and a doting grandfather. His bingo calling skills were renowned, as was his ability to manage the fish pond at the family reunion each summer at Boutiliers Point. As his family grew and spread across the country, he looked forward to summers at the cottage when all returned, the mayhem of happy hour, and the joy of watching cousins and siblings reunite. He was predeceased by his parents Norman and Josephine, brothers David and John, and grandson Malcolm Ramsay Pendergrast. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Carolyn (nee Myrden), children Heather (Sandy Harris), Halifax; Pam (Peter Leighton) and their children Matthew and Laura, Vancouver; Peter (Karen Crombie) and their children Renny and Bess, Halifax; Bill and his children Michael, Madeline and Ben, Edmonton; and Sarah (Jacob Pendergrast) and their children Rowan and Molly, Toronto. The family is grateful to the staff at the Halifax Infirmary for the compassionate care shown to Dad during his final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation. Online condolences may be left at www.jasnowfuneralhome.com Visitation will take place at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Wednesday August 20, 6 – 9pm. Funeral will be at All Saints Cathedral, Thursday August 21 at 2:30pm, with a reception to follow at Ashburn Golf Club, Old Course.
