It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Husband and Father, Paul Gerald Simpson, 87, of Halifax on March 8th, 2023 at the QEII. He was born in Welland, Ontario and was the son of the late Sherman and Mary Simpson.
He joined the Royal Canadian Navy at age 17 and during his 36-year career he served on numerous ships, including the HMCS Magnificent, Bonaventure, Skeena and the Athabascan and he also received the Ambassador for Peace Medal for the Korean War. He was a member of the Chief and Petty Officer mess where he participated in their Dart league and enjoyed many many Many social events. He met the love of his life, Marie at the Olympic Gardens in Halifax and were married for 66 years and raised 3 daughters. He had a zest for life and brought humour and joy to everyone around him, he was always the life of the party. He enjoyed the many family get-togethers at his backyard pool where he pulled a lot of shenanigans, including many water fights with his children and grandchildren and the very competitive pool volleyball. Upon retirement he was able to enjoy many rounds of golf where he achieved a “Hole in One” which he was so proud of.
Paul is survived by his loving wife Marie (Cookson) Simpson; daughters Joanne Baker (Wyman), Sharon Goss (Wayne) and Paula Simpson (Kevin Jamieson); grandchildren Scott (Beth), Matthew (Julia) and Sean Baker; Taylor and Nicole Goss; Shannon and Megan Simpson (Michael Plummer); great-grandchildren Logan Baker, Emmett and Rhyse Simpson and Ruby Pearl Baker; sisters Muriel Murphy and Margaret Rizzo; brothers Jim and Ward (Oresta); and sister-in-law Lorraine. He is predeceased by brothers Kirk (Doreen), John (Ronnie), Hugh; sister Jane (Mike) O’Brien; brothers-in-laws Dan Murphy and Nick Rizzo; sister-in-law Lorna; and great-granddaughter Willow at birth.
The Celebration of Life will start at 2:00 pm on March 18th at J.A. Snow Funeral Home on Lacewood Drive. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Kidney Association of Canada. Paul wishes were for his ashes to be buried at Sea (Maritime Forces Atlantic).
