Born in Dartmouth, NS, she was the daughter of the late J. Alexander and Delma (Wilson) MacLean. She spent a number of years in North Sydney and Smith’s Cove, Digby Co. where she met her loving husband of 69 years, Graham McBride along the Fundy shore with a rowboat over his head. After which she endured many hours of sailing aboard the Kate. Margaret attended Digby Regional High School where she made many life-long friends. She worked for several years at Superline Oil in Halifax and the Bank of Commerce in Port Credit, ON where on her first morning of work had to recoup the loaded guns from the vault and present to the manager.
Raising her family of 3 children, often alone as Graham was in the Navy and spent much time at sea. Margaret enjoyed the social aspects of her various pursuits and loved giving her time to serve others in the community through volunteering. She kept active in a bowling league, was a Girl Guide leader and volunteered at the IWK cafeteria. Along with Graham, through his Chief’s & PO’s group, she regularly visited and entertained residents at the Veteran’s Hospital. As a devoted member of Calvin Presbyterian Church, Margaret participated in providing music for seniors at Maplestone (Fairview Villa). She also sang in the church choir for many years. A long-time member of the Ladies Guild, she served a term as president and was actively involved in their contributions to the life and work of Calvin Church.
Margaret was trained in classical piano and loved listening to music especially that of her siblings, nieces and others from her musical family. She enjoyed traveling in Canada, the USA and overseas. Some of her favorite pastimes included playing various computer games, and a good competitive game of scrabble. Similar to her own mother, she was good at writing poetry with a humorous note and she loved a good laugh. The grand children always looked forward to family dinners and her apple pies, always she remembered who liked which dishes. Lemon curd and biscuits with jam were enjoyed by many as well as her famous peanut butter-onion sandwiches, Dad’s favorite, an interesting choice at church gatherings.
But with all the forementioned, her favorite thing was keeping up with her many relatives and friends from all over the world. She became the one who “kept her kin together”. Margaret had an excellent memory for family stories especially of her early years. Above all she had a great sense of humor and love for all.
The family wished to thank the numerous health care workers who assisted her during her last years. Without you, Margaret’s days would have been much more challenging.
Survived by her husband F. Graham McBride and 3 children, Carolyn (Chris) Ford (Guelph, ON), Victoria Mosher (Halifax) and Ian (Sheri) McBride (Digby).
