Kathleen May O'Leary

It is with great sadness that our family announce the sudden passing of Kathleen “Kathy” May O’Leary, 63, of Halifax, NS, on November 3rd, at the QEII Health Science Centre, in Halifax.

Born in Shilo, Manitoba, she was the daughter of Mary (Wowk) and Daniel O'Leary.

Kathy was proud to say that she was a Cape Bretoner at heart. Graduating Holy Angels high school in 1978, she studied Child Studies at Mount Allison University, and she worked multiple jobs all across the country including Swiss Chalet, Zellers, Chiefs and PO’s Mess Hall in Stadacona, a Golf Resort, among others, all before settling down and getting the education to become a Licensed Practical Nurse working at Northwood Homecare, which quickly became a passion that aligned with all of her values. For almost 30 years, her compassionate heart allowed her to quickly become favorites of many of her clients to where many would only accept her as their caretaker, and be often requested by many others, but always left an impact.

Kathy who would put everybody else before her, no matter what. She always had an ear for listening, a voice for guidance and reason, and most importantly of all, a huge heart for compassion. She had what appeared to be a limitless and varied type of hobbies and interests, including but not limited to: adventure, outdoors, stargazing, camping, painting, making crafts, hiking, sporting events, reading, cooking, world affairs, politics, photography, current events, watching movies, attending live concerts, sitting on the beach, and countless others. These qualities and interests allowed her to make friends, converse, and relate to everybody she met. If there was a major event that was happening in Halifax, she would be there and would make new friends in the process. If she was bored on the weekend, she would go on long drives and adventures around Nova Scotia as day trips, using her passion for photography to appear as if she traveled the world each week. Whether they were rich or someone who had lost their home, she would treat everybody equally without judgment and with immense respect. Always rooting for the underdog, Kathy would always lend a compassionate ear to everyone who was less fortunate and made sure others showed the same respect in her presence and would always go above and beyond giving more than what was needed while asking for nothing in return.

She is survived by her son Tyler, brothers Tommy and Shawn (Peggy); sisters Mary Jane, Patti (Don), Valerie and Francine (Greg); and a great number of nieces and nephews and grand nephews. She was predeceased by parents Mary and Daniel; brothers Freddie and Stevie; sisters Loretta, Josie and Donna. She will be missed by countless people including her brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, close friends, acquaintances, and even clerks at stores she would frequent.

A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, November 14th at 1pm, with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating with reception to follow. Burial will take place at a later date. For those unable to attend, the service will be livestreamed and can be joined by the following link:
