Age 83 of Halifax, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2022. He was born April 8, 1939 in Charlottetown, PEI to George and Margery (Hicks) Paterson. John moved to Sackville, NB, and was a child prodigy enrolling in Mount Allison at the age of 16 where he obtained a B.Sc. in Chemistry. He later went on to earn a B.Eng in Chemical Engineering at TUNS. He worked at both Heavy Water Plants in Cape Breton and as a Process Engineer for Mobil Oil and CE Lummus in Calgary, where he excelled. He finished his career as a chemist with the City of Toronto.
The family would like to thank Northwood Halifax where John spent the last 7 years and received wonderful care. John was proud to have funded a bursary for indigenous students at Mount Allison, as well as funding his godchildren for their secondary education.
He was predeceased by his parents, brother Alan, and sister Margaret. He is survived by his brother Jim (Jacqueline Comeau) of Bedford and sister Elizabeth (Doug) Jarvis of Dartmouth, sister-in-law Grace and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He enjoyed attending the Universalist Unitarian Church of Halifax, playing bridge and bingo.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 8, 2022 at 11am at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home 2666 Windsor St , Halifax, with interment at a later date at Lewis Cove Road Cemetery, Cape Breton. Donations to the John Paterson Indigenous Student Bursary, Mount Allison University, 65 York Street, Sackville, NB E4L 1E4, or charity of your choice.
