John Ronald MacCormack, Professor emeritus of History SMU, B.A., M.A., (Dalhousie), Ph.D. (UofT) of Halifax, N.S., passed away peacefully on May 12th, 2012 at the age of 92. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Allan J. and Ida (Cameron) MacCormack. Prof. MacCormack spent his early childhood in Mabou and Port Hawkesbury, N.S. where he developed a passion for his Cape Breton roots. He finished his schooling in Halifax and enlisted in the Canadian Army (Artillery) at the outbreak of WWII. He saw action in Normandy with the 3rd Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment of the 2nd Canadian Inf. Div. and served as Liaison Officer at Div. H.Q. and fought through Belgium and Holland to reach VE day in Germany. Following the war, he returned to Halifax to attend Dalhousie University to complete B.A. and M.A. studies (1945-49), later receiving a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto after research at the British Museum in London where he met his future wife. Jack taught at Saint Mary’s University from 1956, becoming Chair of the Department of History. He founded and directed the Inst. of Human Values concerned with the interdependence of knowledge, values, and freedom and served as editor of The Vital Nexus (1975-95). He was a recipient of both Canada Council and SSHRC fellowships, and author of Revolutionary Politics in the Long Parliament (Harvard U.P. 1973), Highland Heritage and Freedom’s Quest (1998), and numerous reviews and articles. He was a great music lover and played the fiddle and mouth organ by ear. Jack is survived by his wife, Ann Vibeke MacCormack, his daughter Kirsten Ellen(Donald Westin), his sons Allan Cameron (Annie Yu-chuan Yang) and John Christian, and his sisters Mary (Hector MacFadyen) and Anna (Andre Geddes), his five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his daughter Elizabeth Ann (Paul Jenkins), and his sisters Jean (James Lovett) and Helen Frances (Ronald Malloy). Visitation with be held from 3-6pm on Wednesday, May 16th at Cruikshanks Funeral Home (2666 Windsor St). The funeral service will be held 10 am Thursday May 17, 2012 at Saint Thomas Aquinas Parish; Rev. Owen Connolly officiating; Reception to follow with Private burial, Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the MS Society of Canada or the John Howard Society. Many thanks to the caring staff at Camp Hill Veterans Hospital and Nadine. Jack was admired as a thought-provoking, inspiring teacher, and a creative professional historian with a wide range of interests and a global outlook. A dearly loved and loving husband, father, and friend.
