James Douglas Sullivan

It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Jim Sullivan, 85 years of age on August 20, 2024, beloved husband of Jean-Anne (LeBlanc) Sullivan. Born in Halifax, son of James (Jim) and Dorothy (Parsons) Sullivan, Jim was the eldest son of three children.

Jim graduated from Armdale High School with many honors, St. Mary’s University with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree and an MBA, followed by Advanced Management Studies at Dalhousie University, York University in Toronto as well as U.C.L.A.

His working career of 32 years was with Maritime Tel and Tel achieving the position of Department Head of Resident Services and Director/Head of Marketing responsible for all of Nova Scotia. Following his retirement from MT &T, he did Consulting work for Regina Hill Co. in Toronto and the U.S; he restructured business plans for companies like Bombardier, Dehavaland, and Toronto Transit. In his later working years, his career took him to Bermuda as President of Quantum Communications Telephone Co. from 1997-1999.

Jim was an all-around athlete known to many in the hockey circles, having played for the Fairview Aces, the Monarchs, the Maritime Juvenile and Midget All Stars as well as the Rockingham Eagles. He was especially proud of achieving MVP while he played varsity hockey for St. Mary’s University. He also sailed and raced in Star competitions out of the Armdale Yacht Club and played Senior Men’s Baseball on the Halifax Commons. He was an avid golfer and reached high achievements, winning a Senior Men’s Championship at Oakfield and was very proud to represent Nova Scotia in the Canadian Senior Championships in Vancouver, B.C. He was always involved in sports by either playing, coaching, volunteering or taking on leadership roles. He was President of Centennial Minor Hockey and coached both minor hockey and little league baseball.

Jim was President of Oakfield Golf and Country Club, President of Junior Achievement, the Kinsmen Club in Truro, Chair of Parish Council at St. Benedict’s Church and served on many ministries. He was instrumental in helping to bring three church properties together as one church.

Jim is survived by his loving and devoted wife Jean-Anne (LeBlanc) married 60 years, daughters Pamela (Brian Dillman) Sullivan, and Colette (Rob Miller) Sullivan, son Jim Jr. (Nadine Pettipas) Sullivan. Sisters Sandra (Richard pre-deceased) Billard, and Dorothy (Mike) Mullins. Sister- in- Law Jeanette (Bernie pre-deceased) Montgomery, and Brother- in- Law Donald (Shirley) LeBlanc. Grandchildren Bradley Gillis, Laura Miller (predeceased), Andrew Miller, Alyson Miller, Nathan Sullivan, Mathew Sullivan and Keira Sullivan.

Jim was a loving, generous father and husband, he was loyal and a great leader and mentor. Family was everything to him, not missing any of the hockey or figure skating events. He loved to teach his 6 grandchildren. Many summers were spent relaxing at the cottage (“Jean-Anne’s Jewel”) in PEI with the family, on the beach and playing golf at Crowbush.

Cremation has taken place. Visitations will be held at J.A. Snows Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive (902-455-0531) on Sept. 4th, 2024, from 5-8pm. Funeral mass will be held at St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church on Radcliffe Drive, Halifax on Sept. 5th, 2024, at 12:15pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Diabetes and Alzheimer’s Societies. The family wish to thank the staff at the Halifax Infirmary 8.3 and Ivany Place Northwood for their compassionate care.
