Born in Halifax he was the son of the late Harry (Happy) Joseph Bassett and Marion Myrtle (Stewart). He was predeceased by his wife Shirley Rose Theresa (St. Peter), as well as his brothers Norman Bassett, Charlie McClean, Trevor McClean, Bernie McClean and sisters, Lorraine (Pottie), and Delores (Dewolf). Surviving are his brothers Robert (Bobby) Bassett and Danny McClean and sisters, Kathy (MacNeil), Gloria (James), and Marion (Miller), and Bernadette (Pelrine) and his children Darlene, Harry, Danny and Stacey, as well as a large number of nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
In his early years Harry volunteered to join the army and serve in the Korean War overseas. After the war he went to work for the Department of National Defence at the Ship Repair Unit Atlantic at the Halifax Dockyard as a welder until his retirement in 1980. He spent his retirement years enjoying the simpler things in life which included working the flea markets, volunteering as the Bingo coordinator at Northwood Manor, playing darts and cards and spending time with friends and family.
A memorial service will be held at Cruikshank’s Halifax Funeral Home at 2666 Windsor Street Halifax on Thursday, September 6th. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association. He was loved and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
