Gordon Arthur MacDonald, of Dartmouth, NS passed away peacefully after a short illness at the Halifax Infirmary, on Monday, April 15, 2013 at the age of 76. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Gordon was the son of the late Gordon D. and Bernice (Missions) MacDonald.
Gordon was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife Margaret (Marnie Soper) to whom he was married to for 52 years. He is also survived by his children David (Tammy) of Dartmouth and Heather (Shaun) Scott of Antigonish and grandchildren John, Bradley, and Jacob MacDonald, all of Dartmouth and Adam, Ryan Robin, Jillian, Holly, and Breanna Scott, all of Antigonish, He is also survived by sister Barbara (Charlie) Ebel of Nine Mile River, and brother-in-law Daniel Langley, Halifax, mother-in-law Evelyn Soper of Halifax and several nieces and nephews.
Growing up in Halifax, Gordon attended Queen Elizabeth High School and later pursued a fulfilling career as a professional purchaser retiring from Western Plumbing and Heating Co.Ltd after 42 years of dedicated service. After retirement, “Grampie Gord” enjoyed a second career working in Grampie’s workshop making beautiful wooden trucks, ducks and furniture that will help Gordon’s legacy live long into the future.
Gordon will be remembered mostly for his love and devotion to his family and his hard work ethic. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow and participate in many sports and activities especially hockey, basketball and Highland dancing. Family was very important to Gordon and he spent the last 35 years of his life researching his family genealogy and linking the past with the present through his diligent and detailed work. Many summer days were spent enjoying barbeques and stories with family and friends at the cottage that he built in East Pepestwick enjoying barbeques and stories with family friends. In earlier years, Gordon enjoyed many outdoor activities including hunting and fishing and walking in the woods. For the past thirty-five years, Gordon and Marnie enjoyed being able to enjoy travel to many destinations around the world and were planning their next adventure to New Zealand. He was a long-time member of Stairs Memorial United Church.
Beside his parents, Gordon was predeceased by his sister, Mary Langley, his father-in-law John Soper, his sister-in-law Elizabeth and his little granddaughter, Ashley.
He will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Visitation with the family will be at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax on Thursday April 18th 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral Service will take place on Friday April 19th at 2:00 pm at Stairs Memorial United Church, 44 Hester Street Dartmouth with Rev. Tony Cole and Rev. Laird Stirling officiating. Burial in Fairview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Donations may be made to Stairs Memorial United Church, Dartmouth, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Diabetes Association or charity of your choice.
