Much-loved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully at age 92, surrounded by family, on Thursday, April 18, 2024.
Born in Halifax, he was the son of Thomas and Margaret (Donahoe) Hanrahan. Survived by son Gary of Maitland, daughter Susan (Tim Taylor) of East Pennant, daughter Carole (Robert Clark) of Halifax, grandsons Nick Jarrett (Selina Fortier) and Ben Jarrett (Sara Paquette), sister Joan of Halifax, and brother Robert of Ontario, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Doreen Hanrahan, and his brother Father James Hanrahan.
A long-time member of St. Agnes Parish in Halifax, Gerald would often joke he built three churches, as he had contributed to the building fund of the present St. Agnes church, and had also previously contributed to the building funds for St. Theresa and St. Thomas Aquinas Parishes as well.
Gerald was employed for much of his working life with PetroCanada and its predecessor PetroFina, retiring from there with “freedom 55”. In early retirement, Gerald and Doreen regularly travelled to Florida, as well as visiting Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and England.
A champion badminton player in his youth, Gerald loved to play almost any sport but golf was his passion. He was a member of Ashburn Golf Club for many years. When he was a ‘young’ man of 80, he golfed his age. Being on the golf course was second only to being at his beloved cottage in East Pennant. Here he enjoyed gathering with family and friends, deeply competitive card games, mackerel fishing, swimming and snorkeling.
The family would like to thank the 3rd floor staff at Melville Gardens for their compassionate care.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, April 25 at 11am in St. Agnes Church, 6903 Mumford Road, Halifax, with reception following in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
