George Charles Findlay

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved dad, George Charles Findlay on November 6, 2020. He went peacefully in his sleep. Dad was born October 19, 1927 and had just celebrated his 93rd birthday. We will always cherish his memory knowing we were blessed with a father and grandfather who understood the meaning of family and who led by example that love and kindness were the only important things in life. Dad lived every day with love, laughter, and happiness. He truly was remarkable in every way and this summer, despite his advanced age and a body full of arthritis, he played one of his best rounds of golf.

Dad was the son of Arthur and Marie (Squires) and was married to Nora (Davies) for 69 years until her death on February 6, 2019. He is survived by four daughters, Terrie (Norm Greencorn); Gail, Barbie, Sandi (Bruce Thompson); grandchildren, Rick (Jessica); Sarah (Wade); George (Vanessa); Krista; Danielle (Matt), Travis; Brittany (Jonathan); Stuart; and Sammie. He also has four great-grandchildren, Blake, Ava, Paige, and Sloane. To say he loved his grandchildren is an understatement.

Dad is also survived by his sister Shirley Kane, sisters-in-law Betty Davies and Marie Findlay, brother-in law Perc Davies, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Nora, his parents, and his brothers Arthur and Doug.

Dad’s main priority in life was loving and caring for his entire family. He also nurtured close friendships, of which there were many. He was quick to smile and laugh and while he could get loud and annoyed when his favorite sports teams were losing, he got over it just as quick. He called himself the North American Champ of Cribbage and he gets to keep that title in perpetuity as his final game was just a week ago when he beat (finally) his grandson Stuart. Perfect timing Dad!

Dad began his career at Furnace Withy, then worked for the Halifax Board of Trade, and finally spent the balance of his career as Vice President, Mediacom until he retired in 1993. He was an active member of the community to include: Halifax Junior Chamber of Commerce; Senator of International Jaycee Organization where he was recognized as an outstanding member, taught effective speaking and parliamentary procedures to the Jaycees and other clubs; long standing member Halifax Lions Club; Past-President of the Mayflower Curling Club; Charter member of Oakfield Golf Club; Chairman of the Board of Referees for Unemployment Insurance Commission; Chairman of the Labor Standards Tribunal for NS; Chairman of the Halifax Civic Hospital; Chairman of the Advisory Board for Citadels Hockey Club; Chairman of the Halifax Needham Liberal Association and presided over many elections; spearheaded the creation of the Mount Uniacke Public Library; and in 2012 received an award as provincial volunteer for the year and also an award from Halifax Municipal Council as outstanding volunteer of the year.

Dad felt his most important volunteer work was as Chairman of the Halifax Forum Community Association which he held for 31 years until this past February when he retired. He worked tirelessly on the Save the Forum Committee and we have heard others refer to him as “The Man Who Saved the Forum” but he knew it was all of the people in the community and the Save the Forum Committee who did the hard work to preserve this cherished landmark in Halifax.

There will be a visitation at J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, Friday, November 13 from 6:00 – 8:30 pm. Masks required. Due to COVID restrictions, a private funeral service will be held at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church on Saturday November 14.

We ask that you honor Dad by living a life that is filled with love, kindness and service to others. Dad made a difference and he left this world a better place.
