Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late W. George and Margaret J. (Nauffts) Campbell. Survived by his wife Barbara, of 39 years and daughter, Sarah Jane (Andrew) Thomas, Halifax. He was predeceased by brothers David J. and Donald.
George was a graduate of Dalhousie University where he earned the degrees of BA, Dip. Ed., BEd and MA (History). He taught for thirty-six years in the City of Halifax where, during his last thirteen years, he was Principal of Gorsebrook School and then the combined campus of Gorsebrook and St. Francis (today’s Inglis Street) School. He was a member of numerous professional organizations including the Nova Scotia Teachers Union, the School Administrator’s Association, International Reading Association and the Retired Teacher’s Association. He was proud to have been a life member of the Clan Campbell Society of Nova Scotia. He acted as a guide at the Nova Scotia archives while pursuing his research. During the last year of Second World War, he was a member of the Canadian Officers Training Corps. As a member of the Militia to the Reserve Force, he was an Army Cadet instructor. He trained at Halifax and Camp Aldershot. He earned his commission as First Lieutenant after being assigned to the Reserve Force. He was an instructor with the R.C.A.C. for a number of years. Following his travels in Europe, he settled down to his interests in European history, English literature, classical music and further investigation into the history of Western Europe. His interests were many and varied, but above all else, he loved children, animals and nature. In his later years, he re-activated a keen interest in model railroading.
Visitaiton will be held in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax (902) 455-0531 on Tuesday, October 4th from 4-8pm. Funeral service will be held in the Cathedral Church of All Saints on Wednesday, October 5th at 2:00 p.m. Interment in Fairview Cemetery at a later date.
