Born in Halifax, Gary grew up in a large, close-knit family. He and his brother Bob held their own against their six sisters, and the siblings cared for one another deeply. Gary’s career with the Olivetti Company spanned decades, and in his later years operated a small woodlot from his home on the Prospect Road.
Gary’s greatest love was his wife Helen (Ford); whom he married on July 28, 1956. They lived in Hatchet Lake, and their home was the gathering spot for many Christmas singalongs. Together with brothers and sisters and their families, they enjoyed many holidays and vacations together. Gary and Helen raised two children, Helen Jean and Steven, and the tragic loss of Helen Jean in 1981 was devastating for all of them.
Gary lost his beloved Helen in 2000, and lived alone in their home until his passing. He was an avid hunter, and enjoyed getting up to his hunting camp when he could. It seems fitting that he left us in hunting season. He was a staple at holidays and family birthday dinners, seizing every opportunity to tease and torment his nieces and nephews. He never turned down dessert, especially apple pie (even better if it was served with a slice of cheese).
Gary is survived by his son Steven, in British Columbia and his two granddaughters, Shawna and Morgan along with his great-grandchildren, his sister Karen (Tom) Welsh; sister-in-law Alecta (Robert) Jollimore, brother-in-law, Ronnie (Sandra) Cormier, nephew and friend, Gordon (Hope) Beanlands mourn his passing along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Robert, and sisters Connie (Ronnie) Yeadon; Gloria (Gerald) Wheeler; Judy (Bill) Kerr; Nina (Joe) Thompson; Sandra (Ronnie) Cormier, and June. His remaining family are grateful he was able to spend his final days in his home, per his wishes.
A celebration of life is planned for Dec 3, 6-8 PM, at J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations to Feed Nova Scotia in his honour would be welcomed.
