It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Frances “Carol” Martell (Salterio) at age 89. Carol was born in Halifax, daughter of the late Arthur and Josephine Salterio (Waller). She grew up in Princess Lodge and moved to Bedford after her marriage in 1956 to Joseph Edward Martell. She graduated from Halifax Vocational School in Business and worked at the Department of Education. She left to raise her family and returned to work as an administrative assistant at the Halifax Regional School Board until retirement. She was a long-time member of St. Ignatius Parish and volunteered within both church and community. She travelled widely with family across Canada, USA, Australia and New Zealand. Special family time was spent at the cottage in Lakelands. Carol’s life was full of love for Eddie, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had a quick-witted sense of humour and a friendly smile. She was an avid reader with a keen interest in politics. Mom valued fairness, honesty and equality.
Mom will be dearly missed by her husband Eddie Martell, her children Patti (Doug), Paula (Michele), Cynthia (David Stark, New Zealand) and Monique (Juan, Toronto).
She will be fondly remembered by her grandsons Brad Curran (Jessica), Lee Curran and Christian Stark (NZ) and great grandsons Jackson and Anders. Mom was affectionately known by her grandson’s as ‘grandma’, ‘mom’ and ‘mom with the glasses’.
Carol is survived by her sister Ann Campbell (Port Hawkesbury), brothers-in-law Glen Kerr, Carl Dorey and numerous nieces and nephews. Carol was also predeceased by sisters Jean Patterson (Hugh), Claire Dorey, Mary-Lou Kerr, Betty Salter (Billy), Cyril Campbell and niece Janice Patterson-Williams.
Visitation to be held Tuesday June 11, 6-8 pm at JA Snow Funeral Home, Lacewood Dr, Halifax. Funeral service at St Ignatius Church, Bedford, Thursday June 13 at 12:15 pm. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will take place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville.
Donations in Mom’s memory can be made to the Nova Scotia/Canadian Red Cross.
