The family of Donald Francis Flemming, 80, are deeply saddened to announce his passing on the evening of October 12th, 2021. Don was born in Halifax on February 23rd, 1941, to Mary (Shannon) and Charles Flemming and was predeceased by his sisters Patricia (Donald) Beamon, Boston, Mass., and Claire (Harold) Dunn, Halifax.
Don’s love of sport, music and community cultivated an extraordinary life full of laughter and love that left an indelible mark on the large number of friends and acquaintances who entered his orbit.
Sport was a constant throughout Don’s life, starting on the ice rinks of the south end. Don developed into a star forward with the St. Pats High School hockey team before turning his attention to sailing and curling. Don was a ball of energy around the yacht clubs of NS organizing numerous regattas while also spearheading snipe racing at Petpeswick yacht club in Musquodoboit Harbour in the seventies. Don and Donna were longstanding members of the Mayflower Curling Club and Chester Golf Club. Don’s passion for both sports resulted in him representing Nova Scotia at the 1968 Brier in Kamloops, BC and launching the Junior golf program in Chester. He accomplished all of this whilst being a constant fixture at his children’s games, often coaching their teams or organizing their tournaments; And we can’t forget the armchair quarterbacking from behind the glass at countless curling rinks! Later in life, Don and Donna enjoyed numerous ski and golf trips when they could find time between attending the many, many, many games of their beloved grandchildren and their favourite team, the Wanderers.
Don’s love of music started around the piano of his childhood home on Tower Rd. and was a lifelong passion. Whether he was on stage performing with his beloved “Corvettes” or donating his time as host of CIOE 97.5FM ‘Memories of the 50’s and 60’s’ radio show, Don loved sharing his knowledge and love of music with his dedicated fans and his dearest friends. His love of music led him to join and lead the Cobequid Cultural Society in its effort to build a Performing Arts Centre which will become a cultural icon for Sackville upon its completion.
Don leaves behind a legacy of community building that was a constant throughout his entire life. In addition to the many leadership roles already listed, he was an active member of the Lion’s Club and a Board member of the VG Hospital while he balanced a very successful career. Starting in sales with Caterpillar and John Deere, Don’s resilience, drive and love of numbers eventually led him into the life insurance business which allowed him to do what he loved to do the most, helping families find comfort and peace so that they could live their lives to the fullest.
Family was everything to Don and it started with his intense love and utter devotion to his precious wife Donna Lee (Worth). For 60 years, that love powered D&D as they shared laughter and love from their first home in Sackville to their family home in “Birdland” to their cottage on Millet Lake and then Hubbard’s and finally to their beautiful view of Kearney Lake. Don took so much pride in his children Peter, Paul (Rochelle), Allison (Derek) and Michael (Megan) and was always there to shower them with love and support. His love also extended to his nieces and nephews. When the grandchildren arrived in Jake, Emily, Sean, Braden, Sam, Quinn, Emma and Ben, Grampy always found a way to connect with each one and make them feel special.
J.A. Snow Funeral Home (339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax) will host the visitation on Monday, October 18th from 2-4pm & 7-9pm, as well as a celebration of life service on Wednesday, October 20th at 2pm. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution are asked to consider the Kidney Foundation or the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
