He was born in River Bourgeois on Dec 17, 1918 to Charles and Vina (Landry) Richard. Clarence was well known and highly respected in the carpet installation fraternity, installing carpets in many churches and homes throughout Cape Breton.
He was the beloved husband of 3 wives, all of whom predeceased him: Anna (Sutherland), Vina (Burke) and Marie Sampson (Shanks).
Clarence was the cherished step-father of 5: Douglas, now deceased (Alice), Edward (Valerie), Sharon Praught (Dan), David (Marguerite) and Patricia MacDonald (Paul). He was a loving Grandfather to 11 step-grandchildren and 12 step great-grandchildren.
Clarence was predeceased by his brothers: Martin, Leo, Fabie, Alfred, John and his sister Rita Landry. Clarence is survived by his brother Tony, Toronto, and his sisters, Geraldine, Digby and Monica, River Bourgeois.
Clarence was one of the five Richard brothers who served overseas in WW11 and returned safely home afterward to their parents in the “River”. Clarence proudly served in the Merchant Navy and sailed the waters between Nova Scotia and South America transporting vital oil/supplies to our Canadian refineries.
A lifetime cribbage player, he was recognized by everyone who challenged him to a game as a formidable opponent.
Memorial service to be held on Tuesday, May 26 at 11 am in St Theresa’s Catholic Church. Burial to follow at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
A service will be held in celebration of his life at a later date yet to be finalized. For those who so wish, donations may be made to the Canadian Legion #47, St. Peter’s (Cape Breton) Branch.
