Crosby, Carol Eaton, RN, “Gram”, 89, of Waverley, passed away peacefully with family by her side March 9, 2024. Born in Kentville NS December 25, 1934. She was the daughter of Eric and Edith Woodworth.
She is predeceased by her husband Reginald Clifton Crosby and her sisters, Ann Manning and Betty Paquet. She is survived by her two sons; Jamie (Lori) in Bedford and John in Waverley, as well as granddaughters; Emily (Richard and Great Grandson Henry) and Robyn (Donovan) and her brother William “Bill” Woodworth.
Carol graduated from the VGH School of Nursing 1956. She organized the 50th reunion for her class and had many long friendships with her Nursing classmates. In 1979 Carol and Shirley Freer were determined to fill the need for health and social services in the Bedford-Sackville area. They inspired others to take on this challenge and in 1987, the Emergency Department at the Cobequid Multi-Service Centre opened, making it the first free standing Emergency Room in Eastern Canada. Later a new larger Cobequid Centre opened in 2006.
In their long-term home in Waverley, Carol took great pride in the property. It was on the site of the old gold mine. She had many beautiful gardens, with her rhubarb and raspberry bushes being transplanted generously to family and friends. She had wild friends such as guineafowls and “Robert” the bobcat who regularly visited inside the porch on cold winter nights to the chagrin of their cat, Cloud. She once said that, “there was an ass eating her gardens”. It turned out to be the neighborhood donkey. Mom took great enjoyment living in the country with all the furry and feathered friends that came to visit.
In the early 1960’s, Reg won a red MGB in a Cadbury chocolate bar contest and she thoroughly enjoyed burning around in that convertible. Excursions also included trips for days all over the NS to Frenchy’s to get great finds for the family.
Camping trips to PEI and Keji were very special for the family, especially Soldiers Lake where she upset the canoe with all aboard. Additionally, she led a crew that crashed Jamie and Lori’s camping honeymoon in Wine Harbour to their delight. There were numerous dinner parties, Saturday wood cutter lunches and social events in Waverley and all were welcomed. Mom was a great baker, everyone looked forward to the next celebration when her famous money cakes, shortbreads and butter tarts were waiting.
Carol left a lasting impact on those around her. It’s always comforting to know that someone’s memory will be cherished . She will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Donations in Carol's memory may be made to Cobequid Health Centre Foundation.
Cremation has taken place and a graveside service at a later date.
