It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brian Leo Maloney on Saturday, April 20 in Halifax . Brian was born in Kings Cove Newfoundland on April 11, 1923 to the late Alice Rose and Michael Maloney. He grew up in the small fishing community where he attended a one room school house until he was old enough to go to boarding school in St. John’s some 160 miles away . He graduated from St. Bonaventure school in 1940 and started a career in banking followed by 34 years with Imperial Oil Limited. He met his future wife Betty in 1950. They were married in 1952 – the start of a happy 63 year partnership until she passed in 2016. Brian was a man of great commitment – to his job, his community, his church and most of all his family . His long and distinguished career at Imperial Oil ended with his retirement as personnel manager in 1985. This enabled him and Betty to start the tradition of going to Florida for a month each year to meet with good friends and good weather. These were the golden years and ones that he enjoyed enormously. He was an active member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce for many years and played many roles in the Knights of Columbus for over 75 years. He was honoured with the Nova Scotia State Council Award of Achievement award in 2023 which touched him deeply. Brian also served as a lay minister at St. Thomas Aquinas Church for over 30 and a visiting Eucharistic Pastor minister for many years . He was active in his condominium community, where he lived for over 20 years and served in many roles, including that of president. His greatest devotion was to his family – his beloved wife, Betty and his five children: Kathy (Bill Fraser), Brian (Myrna), Anne (Ray Wagner), David
(Mary) and Bob . Their needs were always front and centre . It gave him great pleasure to know that despite the miles between them, the family stayed very close.
In addition to the close relationship with his immediate family, Brian was blessed with to have a close relationship with his nieces in Newfoundland. He enjoyed their visits immensely . Brian moved to the Berkeley retirement residence in later years where he made many friends and enjoyed the many activities offered. It was the happy scene of one of several 100 th birthday celebrations last year. In addition to his children, he leaves 12 grandchildren, Mary Beth, (John Suriano), Jennifer, (Pat Murphy,) Lisa (Phil Moreira), )Laura, (Iain Fraser,)Jack, Mary Kate, Brian, Matthew, Maria, Kaitlyn, Christopher and Patrick and 10 greatgrandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Betty, his bothers Pat and Aiden, his sister Mary and his daughter-in-law Mary. Our family lost a truly wonderful person this week, but he will live forever in the hearts and memories of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
