It is with profound sadness that the family of Ann M. Blackwood, Halifax, Nova Scotia, announce her passing on February 20, 2023, at the age of 76 years. She left this world in the presence of her guardian angel and life partner, Benjamin R. T. McIntyre.
Ann is survived by her loving Benjamin, Halifax, Nova Scotia, her brother Michael (Sally) Green, nephews William (Kate) Green, and James (Anna) Green, her great nieces and great nephew [all in England], and nephew Captain Ian McIntyre of New Brunswick.
Ann was born on August 13, 1946, to her cherished parents, Flight Lieutenant William James Green and Bertha Green (both deceased) in Kittering, England.
Ann graduated from the University of Bath, England, with degrees in English and French. She continued her studies and obtained her BEd and MEd. To pursue her career in education, Ann moved to Nova Scotia and started a position as the English Department Head at Barrington High School and then became Principal of Evelyn Richardson Memorial Elementary School where she was loved by students, parents, staff, and the community.
In 1993, Ann became the Department of Education’s English Language Arts Consultant for the province of Nova Scotia. She also held positions of Assistant Director, Director, and Executive Director until the time of her retirement in 2015. Ann was instrumental in all areas of curriculum ─ Active Healthy Living, Arts Education, Co-operative Education, English Language Arts, Literacy, Mathematics, Pre-Primary, Science, Skilled Trades, Social Studies, and Youth Pathways and Transitions, to name just a few.
Ann won countless accolades and was recognized provincially, nationally, and internationally for her knowledge, support, and leadership in Primary to grade 12 education. Ann was dedicated, innovative, and student focussed. She was a cherished friend and colleague whose generosity, thoughtfulness, and compassion knew no bounds.
In 2015, Ann retired and enjoyed her time with Benjamin, laughing, reading novels, watching crime shows, spending time with her friends, and meticulously planning and taking trips to Europe and to the United States. Ann deeply enjoyed retirement and lived life to its fullest after a 40+ year career where she was deeply devoted to the students and teachers of Nova Scotia. Ann often said that she highly recommended retirement.
Ann has left such a positive impact on those who have had the pleasure to know her. She will be so deeply missed by all of those who loved her.
