Alan was the 3rd son of the late Donald C.F. and Marjorie (Theakston) Moors of Halifax. He attended LeMarchant, Cornwallis and QEH Schools and, later, Dalhousie University. While mastering bridge at Dal, Alan earned a Bachelor of Arts in his spare time. He held a number of jobs before settling into a career at Statistics Canada where he wrote many masterful e: mails and met many wonderful friends. He retired from Statistics Canada in 2015. It was also through Statistics Canada (the Ottawa office) that he met Cindy—his wife of 36 years—sweeping her off her feet and back to Halifax.
Throughout Al’s life, he pursued many passions with gusto—hiking, camping and canoeing, fantasy, science fiction and music. He loved his dogs, especially Bandit, his first. He enjoyed board games and was an enthusiastic and fearless bridge player. He read widely. He loved to travel by train and collected more model trains than VIA had rolling stock. He was a devoted uncle, generous with his time, gifts and advice to his nieces and nephews and, later, their children. Above all, Al revelled in regularly dining out at his many favourite restaurants in Halifax—from ‘hidden gems’ to all-you-can-eat buffets—with folk from his family and his extensive, diverse circle of friends. These were raucous occasions, where, over several servings, Al would engage in vigorous and broad debate and discussion. Al’s encyclopedic memory of politics, literature, history, and geography would be employed along with his sense of humour. A good time with good food would be had by all.
Al left us all too suddenly and all too early. He will be missed, but not forgotten. Al is survived by his wife, Cindy, and his dog, Ghetti; his sister Pamela Matthews (Bill, deceased), Dartmouth; his brothers Brian (Marilyn), Dartmouth; Don (Marcella, deceased), Quispamsis, NB; and Ken (Kim), Halifax; his sister in law Laurie Barnes, Ottawa, ON; as well as a host of deeply loved cousins: Jack (Mae), Jonathan (Jennifer) , Greg, Peter, Mark; nephews/nieces: Bill (Donna), Val (Dan), Phil (Mary), Jeff ( Paula), David ( Deb), Erin (Greg), Alisha, Donald (Christine) , Leslie (Tracy), Jillian (Justin), Mike (Jill), Robb (Katrina), Brian (Crystal); and grandnephews/grandnieces: Kevin, David, Simon, Samantha, Carter, Kiah, Issac, Jacob, Charlie, Sam, Molly, Summer, Will, Owen, Angus, Taylor, Carmen, Noah, Sophie, Bridget, Leo, Hailey, and another due in early May.
A celebration of Al’s life will be held at the Delta Halifax Hotel 1990 Barrington St. on Sunday March 20 from 2:00 to 5:00. COVID Protocols will be observed. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Al should be sent to a charity close to his heart, the Metro Turning Point 2170 Barrington Street Halifax NS B3K 2W4.
