Myra Lefkowitz, of New York City, and Boynton Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully at her home on July 16, 2024.
Born on 6/4/1939 to Sarah and Milton Friedland, Myra grew up as an only child in the Bronx and embodied the spirit of a true New Yorker. She devoted her life to her beloved husband of 60 years, Norman, and their children Lida (Paul), Bill (Shari), and Lewis (Laura). She cherished her grandchildren Michael (Alexa), Robby, Emily, Melissa, Spencer, John, and her new great-grandchildren Lucy Cecilia and Teddy Norman.
Myra also loved her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ruth and Irving Melnick, nephew Lloyd (Jill, Ava, Carter), and many relatives, and friends. She always stayed involved with her family and friends.
A high achiever ahead of her time, Myra graduated from high school at just 16 years old and went on to attend City College. Initially, she aimed to study pre-med and become a doctor at Cornell University. However, Myra found her true calling in education, a field that reflected her deep passion for family and sharing knowledge. She earned her college degree and two master’s degrees.
During her teen years, Myra was a regular at the Copa, often meeting celebrities in cafes and clubs, where her mother, Sarah, played piano. This nurtured her love for music, fashion, theater, and a vibrant lifestyle. She had a keen interest in fascinating personalities and seamlessly integrated creativity and the arts with academics.
In addition to being a full-time wife, mom, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend, Myra dedicated over 30 years of her life to teaching in the South Bronx, giving every student the chance to reach their personal best. Beyond academics, she emphasized character, drive, work ethic, athletics, wellness. Myra helped students aim for higher education, strong family lives, and societal contributions.
She was also a true mentor to her colleagues and provided many younger professionals the opportunity to grow, “allowed them to find hope in themselves,” and reminded them “to keep on going.” She also created unique strategies and shared them with her team. She was an inspiration to so many generations including her entire family. Recently, a former 5th-grade student from 25 years ago recognized her, thanked her for her lasting impact, and called her the best teacher and person he'd ever known.
Myra embraced life with passion and motivated many. She briskly walked 3-5 miles daily and took vitamins long before it was common knowledge that most people lack vitamin D. She cherished her time in Florida over the past few decades. Hosting family and friends for holidays was a joy for her, and family time was always a priority. The world has lost an incredible woman, but her legacy of pursuing peace and valuing family will endure and continue.
Our mother was a “preserver of good will and leader of character both in our family and beyond. She raised us the right way, emphasized the importance of academics and prepared us for the rigors of the world. We will never forget her loving spirit and kindness.” Myra’s legacy will continue!
