Unkie, every day I still try to make you proud. I hope that you look out for all the family but are getting to see how much you have taught us all and how we use than you better ourselves and others around us. Give grandma and grandpa a big hug for me.

He was the best big, little brother anyone could ask for! Didn't get to say goodbye,  but I know I will see him again. Miss you so much Doug!!!

Doug was a VERY special man - who never failed to stop just to say "Hi" and thank me for assisting at a Jewel store. As "The Donut Guy" at Clyde's Donuts, I would see him at Jewel meetings, grand openings, re-grand openings, etc..... and he was always there with a pat on the back & a sincere Thank You! My FAVORITE memory though was at a Jewel holiday luncheon just  last year in early December at the Itasca office. With my full white beard I was asked to make a special appearance as Santa, at the lunch, and came in looking for "Little Doug".........I told him how excited the elves were after seeing him in the video making the FIRST home delivery and wanted to know if they could deliver to The North Pole. His answer - YES. We then said what a great job he did on the video and gave him a special acting award for his performance. The Elves nominated him for BEST actor, but he didn't get it.......and before I could give him the punchline that he got Best "Supporting Actor", he beat me to it by saying - "Yeah - Jo Jo probably got it!!" I laughed and said - "Doug, you ruined my line!" I pulled an "academy award" looking award out of my Santa pack, and he received it proudly. Again, this was my favorite memory of Doug.  He will be missed by me and all of his friends at Clyde's Donuts!!   Mike Buhrmann / Clyde's Donuts - Addison, IL.

Oh...how Carissa remembers going out with Lexi and Doug somewhere in the early years and they had to stop by Jewel in Round Lake.  Well...low and behold, as Doug was walking through the store, it truly was not representative of how he felt it should look.  He spend the next hour with the store manager addressing whatever issues there was.  This was a great conversation with Carissa as to Doug's commitment to excellence at all times.  He was the picture of commitment and hard work, as I knew that from my wee hour emails handling your real estate matters.    I never heard him complained, he loved his job and all that was in front of him with family or activities.  The positive energy was real and honest!
This goes without saying....he is thought about often!

What enjoyment I received watching you two continually walked around our subdivision when you lived here in Timberwoods  “hand in hand”. It made good conversations around my dinner table with my daughters as a strong component to a great relationship.

I have been trying to write this for a week now but somehow I keep putting it off because it brings a finality I am not ready for as my eyes start to tear up now. Doug was my best friend the last 15 years and the best friend I will ever have I know. We met each other through work but soon came to realize this was gonna be a friendship like no other. I spent holidays at Doug's house back then and have been part of the Cygan family since.  Even after I moved from Chicago in 2009, we talked every week , maybe only a minute or 2 with our schedules but always ended with love ya and miss ya brother. We met for dinner at least 1x a quarter when I was in Chicago for work and had dinner at Hugo Frog's bar and just laughed for hours on end catching up. We went on trips with our wives and were planning our next one when Doug got sick. My kids adored him and still talk about him even though they only saw him a few times because why? Doug made them feel special like he did for everyone. And then there are our annual trips to Vegas with my buddies or with Fitti(Rich) and Hotti(Scott) and Pool Boy(Jon B). These  trips will never be the same. We did bring Mitch last year so he is now forever more on the trip! Shonna, we love you so much and want to help in any way we can to support you and the kids through these heart breaking days so please let us know. Doug(Freshee), I know you are in a better place and God will re unite us again one day. I still can see you in my life as I know when things are going my way, its you up there making it happen for me and my family. Love ya and miss ya brother

Hi Doug.. I miss you immensely. My heart, hasn’t really been able to process everything. I’m not sure if it ever will. But something I do know, is  that you  irrecovably changed my life. Not just mine, but my brothers and sisters and most importantly my mothers. We had a long history of brokenness. We were scattered and torn, our relationships hurt. But one day, you came into our lives. You saw our family and though you had no obligation to, you choose to welcome us with open arms into your family. You brought all of us together again and helped mend the pain that lingered with us. You loved and protected us. You taught us all lessons, you gave us all memories, you took us by the hand and brought us with you to a happier future. One where we all laughed, traveled places, and spent time together as  a family. For this I am eternally grateful. 

When you asked me to take care of things, if something happened.. I never thought even for a second something would. But I promised you anyways. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to be as great of a man as you were. But I will never stop trying, and I will never forget my promise to you. I love you Doug. Thank you so much for coming into our lives. 

Dear Shonna and family,
I've worked for Doug on his team for the last 23 years.  I have so many wonderful memories of him but my favorite is my time spent with him every Saturday at the office.  Without fail, around 1045am, I'd hear that familiar whistle as he walked down the hall.  He'd come into my office and casually sit in the chair.  We'd talk about everything and nothing for about 20 minutes.  Usually our conversations centered around our families, our plans for the weekend, vacation plans and our "home bosses".  He always made me laugh and he made himself laugh too as he talked.  He would without fail tell me "dont stay to long" and he'd be off.  I still wait for that whistle on Saturdays around 1045 and that fun time spent with him.  Saturdays will never be the same without him.  I will forever treasure those talks with him each week.

I first met Doug at one of Lexi and Kaylee’s dance competitions.  He was so friendly and I could tell right away what a good person he was. His pride for Lexi and the team was so obvious, and the girls were all so happy to have him there. I remember Kaylee telling me he had bought her a snack when I wasn’t around. She was so impressed with him, the kind gesture really made an impression on her. She mentioned more than once how sweet she thought it was of him to think of her. It’s those little gestures that can make lasting impressions, and that was the type of guy Doug was, I would bet he left lasting impressions on everyone he came in contact with. I will always regret not making plans to get together with Shonna & Doug with my husband Matt and I.  I believe they would’ve enjoyed each other’s company, and would have had a lot of fun together. We will miss  & remember Doug fondly, and pray that his family can find peace in knowing he led such a passionate life. We love you Shonna and are here for you always! Love Eden & Kaylee XOXO

I still wait for my 6 am phone call on his way to work, I still wait for his 7 pm phone call on his way home.  After 20 years of this I am still not sure if he was checking on me to see if I was working or to let me know he was, I guess I will have to wait to ask him in person.  There are countless times throughout the day when I catch myself drifting off and smiling about the time I was fortunate enough to have been around him.  He had a unique way of making your day a little bit better even if it was just a quick call.  

There are not many people in your life that you come across who touched so many.  Doug was a friend to all but still made each of us feel like we were more special to him than him to us.  I hope I will always wake up looking for his call and close the day the same way, I am grateful for the time I was able to spend with him and I am sure we all feel the same way.

Doug was many things to many people as evident by these wonderful posts. I'd like to take a few minutes to say what he meant to me and my family. I met Doug  40 years ago at the age of 15 at our first H.S. golf practice.  He was a-little cocky and confident and I liked him immediately! Doug became like a brother, and along with Jon Behm, the three of us became lifelong friends. 

 To us, Doug wasn't the President of Jewel but rather just  "Douglas". He was funny, competitive, respectful, and yes even as a teenager and young adult, a workaholic.  We had legendary LawnJart tournaments and i can attest to something Scott said about Doug at the celebration of his life...that if Doug beat you at something, he was also good at reminding you about it. I'll miss that. 

To Mrs C., I say thank you for sharing your son with us. To Rich and Scott, I say thank you for letting Douglas be our brother too.  To Shonna, Mitchell, Taylor, and the entire family, I offer my deepest condolences.  

Jon and I will now be playing the rest of our lives "a man down". I feel blessed to have known Douglas and to have been able to call him friend. Rest in Peace big man...we will see you on the other side...................Jeffrey

I remember playing basketball with Doug twice a week at 6 am prior to work in Melrose Park for many years. Neither of us were super quick nor did we run the full court on every play however Doug routinely pulled on my jersey to slow me down! I miss his competitive nature and I will definitely miss him at my retirement party. He would have been the only Itasca invitee and I’m positive he would have  attended.  Thank you to the Cygan family for sharing him with me. 

    Please accept our condolences on the passing of Doug. Though we both had a working relationship with him, we also considered him a dear friend. Words cannot express how wonderful of a man he was and how many lives he touched. Doug will truly be missed. Once again our most sincere condolences.

To the world he was Doug Cygan, business man extraordinaire. To me, he will always and forever be Unkie Doug. I was added to the family at age 5 as Rich’s adopted daughter. For an all too brief time I had the pleasure of being the only niece under his umbrella. Spending holidays and vacations together, trips to Disney and Michigan and random Sundays playing Uno as a family and watching movies... you start to drift away as you get older and start to live your life... but there is never a time I couldn’t call him for help, count on him for guidance, hear his laughter at the twists and turns growing up took me on. I’ll miss his laughter the most. Knowing that he’s been there to motivate, inspire, and catch anyone who falls has never been a question. Now it’s up to all of us to make him proud and walk on our own. As a family, we will always be here for each other and live on knowing that he helped shape each and every one of us into what we are today.  I love you Unkie.

To the Cygan Family,
I met Doug 22 years ago , he was a great friend and mentor to me in the Bakery supermarket business. Always concerned and asked about my family always such a giver and great coach. I’m still in shock and so deeply saddened. 
I had some God Winks that I have to share : since the beautiful Celebration of Life for Doug, I know to call them God Winks. 
I was hiking in Crested Butte Colorado morning of July 5th I walked by this beautiful wooden cross no more than 5 minutes later I received the call of Doug’s passing. I had to walk by that cross again to get back I prayed for all of you and prayed Doug was with Jesus and suffering no more and told God how sad I was and so many others.  This cross is the one I walked by and wanted you to see it. 
The next day I hiked a new area and was praying and talking to God lifting you all in prayer and prayed to God Doug didn’t suffer I looked up and on this beautiful aspen tree were these initials DC. 
Now I know another God Wink. Wanted you to have this picture as well. 
3rd God Wink: I’ve been reading Chuck Swindoll Book called Laugh again all based upon book of Philippians- at that the memorial I saw the Philippians verse 4 reference. I smiled and prayed to God for all these blessings given in the midst of such sadness . 
The service was absolutely beautiful I will continue to lift you all in prayer for Gods Comfort, His Love and His Loving care to be with you each day .

I grew up on Emerald Street next to Memorial Park and spent many summer  days playing baseball in the park and a game we called "Ditch It" at night with Doug and all the other neighborhood kids. It was a great place to grow up. Lots of good memories. Was very sorry to hear of his passing. Deepest condolences to all of Doug's family from The Dozier Family😔

Colello/Doug memory:
I had the opportunity to work with Doug at the Itasca office for a short time.   Doug was super engaged with those around him.  He taught us all life lessons through his Doug quotes. " Don't be a victim,  let's get moving, you're the author of your own story, sleep is over rated and many more!
When I returned to the stores after we were sold to Albertsons and my position was eliminated, I saw Doug at Company meetings and store visits.   He always asked how my family was.  He asked what my son was up to and how my wife was doing. It wasn't aways business!
He always listened to what you had to say.   
I know Rich and Scott as well. They, like their brother are always engaged with those around them.  They have love for family and a passion for what they do. We all grew up at Jewel together!  There are many great memories of our journey over the years!
The memorial celebrating Doug's life was amazing.   Thank you for sharing your memories of Doug with us.

One of my fondest memories of Doug was discussing where to look for a house up north and where not to look. He took the time to talk to me during a walk through. He joined his group and the man who came in from out of state wanted to talk to me but I was in my own world and trying to be invisible. My name was called and I said "I am sorry, I did not realize you were talking to me. No one ever wants to talk to me." With that, Doug said " I always talk to you." I said "you don't count, your one of us." And we all laughed.  #Cyganstrong

What a great and kind man Doug  was!  I was fortunate and blessed to have been able to call him my friend.  I was so shocked and saddened to learn the news of his passing.  During his Memorial Mass I laughed (Poor kid from Mundelein...) and cried at the stories, but I could picture him saying and doing  all those things with his family.  I had known Doug for close to 18 years, and  when I would see him at the health or lunch the first thing he would say is “Hey Pal how’s family & job going” and then he would tell me all about the family, sports, plays & dance activities.   His family meant the world to him!  My heart and prayers go out to your entire family.  My God Bless you all.

Doug and I shared 1 thing - we each have 3 daughters , mine are 22,23,26, I am 59 years old and live in crystal lake!  We used to live in Mchenry for 24 years when my girls were little - like Doug, did not have allot , but we had each other!   When I saw the picture shots last night at the chapel it reminder me of my family vacations .  I sent Doug an email about 2 years ago about our daughters and how lucky we are/ he said yes we were ! Doug came to our office several years ago and you could Judy feel his passion. - Cygan strong!  One thing I will never forget about Doug was he made an effort to talk to Everybody! No matter if you were a high class vendor or just a broker person like me, he made you feel welcome!   One time I asked him how are we going to defend my Jewel in Crystal lake against Mariano's ? He said we have a plan, don't you worry!   I am going to miss him dearly!  The songs last night were awesome ! How he Loves you was at my daughters wedding !   I will continue to pray for Doug's family !  God Bless 

I met Doug 8 years ago.  I came into his office for a meeting about the partnership between Jewel-Osco and the Chicago Wolves.  From hello, Doug made me feel like I mattered to him.  I was 32 years old at the time, and a bit out of my league sitting in his office.  It didn't matter.  The first day I met him, I learned about his family, I laughed (a lot), and walked out thinking "Is this guy for real?".  He was an instant favorite for me.  Doug was a titan of his industry.  Doug ran the #1 grocery chain in one of the biggest cities in the country, yet he thought it well enough to always take my meetings.  He thought it well enough to always give our team, the Wolves, a place at the table with him.  He believed in it.  He was my favorite meeting every year.  From that first meeting forward, every time we met, I got updates on the kids, who was doing what.  I heard about the last or next adventure with Shonna.  I'm sure he loved his family when we was around them.  I know he loved his family fiercely when he was not around them.  He was so proud of his family, his marriage, his work, his alma mater.  He was one of the good ones and he will be sorely missed by me and the Wolves.  Rest easy, Doug.

Shonna- You and Doug have my admiration and respect for raising such a resilient, courageous and loving family.  Your true love for Doug shined brightly last night through your words and poise.  Few people couple have spoken so eloquently.  We should all aspire to be the people you are.  It's a privilege to have known and served alongside Doug.  His skill, humanity and passion for Jewel Osco's people was an inspiration and made me want to be better than my best.  

I remember the joy of having Doug and his lovely family at Wrigley field as our guests on Fisher Nut night.  It was so much fun seeing the joy on his face as one of his kids threw out the first pitch.  To me, Doug was always someone who would take a moment to say thanks and appreciate the partnership and friendship of our business relationship.  I also fondly remember early in my career when, as a vendor for Kraft General Foods, we had our CEO in Chicago for a visit.  I asked Doug if he would allow me to have a top-to-top meeting at Jewel with our CEO.  I remember his words like it was yesterday..."no problem, we'll make it happen Chris and don't worry it will go great."  As a young account manager in the industry I needed people like Doug who cared first about supporting me as a friend and business partner.  He had a big influence on my business career.  And, the meeting did go great!  I will miss him.

Dear Cygan Family, 
My heartfelt condolences. I would get on my knees every morning and pray for Doug while he was sick. I worked with Doug on the vendor side in the office for 20 years. I will never forget his acts of kindness especially when I had emergency surgery and sent a gift basket and card. He always made me work harder for the common good. I will be forever grateful for his support.
His spirit is enternal.

Part 4
Towards the end of our ‘vibrant discussion’ I looked up and noticed Doug in the corner bar seat leaned against the wall with tears in his eyes from laughing so hard. I chuckled, but just lightly and decided to maneuver myself out of the “kill zone” and over by Doug because to be honest that is where I felt most safe at the time.  As I was taking my perch with my tail between my legs next to him, he again chuckled and said loudly, “it aint easy buddy! I told ya, especially with this group, it aint easy.” I laughed, again lightly, and noticed Mikyla roll her eyes and began to speak privately to her mother in the adjacent corner. 
Again, I felt the bear paw gently rest upon my shoulder, but it was my left this time. Doug gently leaned in and I leaned toward him as he whispered five words that I will hold close to my heart the rest of my days. He said, “nothing worth having ever is.” We then pulled back and locked eyes just briefly as he then turned his attention to the corner where the ladies were standing and Mikyla was undoubtedly still singing my praises. We watched them converse for the better half of ten seconds before we met eyes again and cheered each other. 

From then on whenever he would hear Mikyla beating me up a little bit he would say with a chuckle in his voice, “It aint easy…” I know now that was his subtle reminder to be strong and remain a man of patience and love just as he was.

Doug Cygan was a man of many attributes. He was a man of the Lord, one of the hardest working men I know, loyal, moral integrity, confidence and generosity. This man from day one made me feel accepted as a part of the family. He was a rock. Most importantly he was a devoted son, brother, father and husband. 

I hope that in this time of sorrow his friends, colleagues and especially his loving family find peace and comfort knowing that he joins the army of angels and saints watching over us from the Lords Kingdom as we celebrate his incredible life. 

Part 3
Now jump to several months later. Doug, Shonna and I have had several times spent together at this point between birthdays or casual cigar breaks. The night was September 2, 2017. I know this because Doug said something to me that will forever stick in my mind. It was so influential to me in fact, that I quoted Doug on my social media platforms on this day. After all, that is what my generation does when something important is said or done; posts it to social media. 

Mikyla and I had been spending a lot of time in the city so she wanted to spend some quality time at home. I was excited to be invited up to spend the weekend with the family because hanging out with Doug and Shonna was not like hanging out with “mom and dad”, it was like hanging out with one of our couple friends. That is one of the things I love and admire about Doug and Shonna; from day one they have treated me like family. 

After playing in the back with my dog, Sampson, whom Doug also loved, we moved the party into the basement for a nightcap where Mikyla and I learned and tasted “dragons blood” for the first time. Needless to say we were having a great time, it did not take long before I did or said something that did not sit well with Mikyla. She started in on me for the better half of two to three minutes and let me tell you, for those of you who don’t think two to three minutes is a long time, I challenge you to hold your breath for that duration of time and imagine your girlfriend scolding you in front of her parents for that long. 


Part 2
Just so that you understand what I am talking about, you must know I am a “hugger”. Some might even go as far as to say a hug connoisseur. This hug was so meaningful because not only did it make me feel immediately welcome, it was important because it came from the most loved, respected and influential man in Mikyla’s life. 

The hostess came to our table and announced that our dining table was ready and we could be seated. Doug and I simultaneously motioned for the ladies to go first then he continued to motion me. As I turned and started to walk toward the table, the true anxiety set in; all the questions of how to entertain parents appropriately on a first introduction started swirling in my head. After about eight to ten paces toward the table, I felt this bear paw rest gently upon my right shoulder. Doug leaned in and whispered, “you’re not nervous, are you?” I turned around and briefly locked eyes with him and with as much courage as I could muster, I told that man the only lie I’ve ever told him. “No sir”. He smiled and patted my shoulder as we approached the table and said loudly, “Good! Because tonight is going to be fun!”

When we all arrived at the table it was as though we had four people frozen like deer in the head lights and one person directing traffic. I was thinking I was going to sit next to Mikyla and face her family panel style. Thank God for Doug. He threw his arm around me once again and said, “tonight Adam, you sit next to me. Ladies, you provide us with a beautiful view,” as he winked at Shonna. It was at that moment all anxieties disappeared and I wanted to be with Mikyla more than ever. Not only was she incredible, but it only made sense that her parental figures were incredible as well. I wanted to learn from this man while I worked on growing something beautiful with someone beautiful. 

Part 1
I want to start by recognizing the entire Cygan family for their strength and resilience during these tough times. Your perseverance to stay positive and lean on each other for strength and love is inspiring. 

It was April 5, 2017 when I had the pleasure of meeting Doug. It was a big day for me because not only was I meeting Doug, but also his wife Shonna and Shonna’s mother, Janice. I had been dating Mikyla casually for the better part of five months, but we were ready to take the next step in our relationship. Before that, however, it was important to Mikyla, as it was to me, to meet the people that had shaped and raised this incredible person I was so in love with. 

After meeting at the restaurant, I checked my coat and was greeted by Mikyla. She led me to a waiting table in the bar where her mother and grandmother were waiting. I gave them both a big hug and we immediately started to get to know each other. After a few pleasantries were exchanged, I inquired as to if Doug would be joining us.  Shonna let me know that he was here, but he was mingling with some friends and colleagues that he ran into on the way in and would be joining us shortly. It was at that time that I noticed this man of immense power and energy working his way through the room with an enchanting, Gatsby like, swagger toward the table. I kid you not when I tell you that man shook every single hand in that area as he made his way toward me. 

As he approached the table we made eye contact and with a growing smile he said loudly, “So you must be the man of the hour!” Meanwhile, I am thinking to myself, “sir you literally know every person in this restaurant, YOU are the man of the hour,” but I straightened my shoulders extended my hand and announced, “Yes sir, Adam Recker. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” He grabbed my hand and pulled me in for one of the top 5 best hugs I have ever exchanged in my life. 

Thank you Doug for being so generous with fun outtings for the dance moms but Thank you more for loving our sweet Shonna.
I hope you can all find peace in the beautiful memories.

My daughter and Lexi  (Doug’s daughter) have been friends for many years.  Both girls participated in cheer and dance together which, of course, involves carpooling .  On the nights that Doug would carpool, Liv would always come home with a funny story about something he said on the way home.  One night she came home and (at the time the kids were really into rap music) she said he let them play their raps as loud as they wanted and was even participating in the rap as well.  And of course, always took them through the drive thru.   My carpool night paled in comparison to a car ride with Doug.  

Our deepest condolences go out to his family and everyone who knew him.  Those car rides are now a memory that my daughter will always cherish.  Thank you Doug for that precious gift. 



Some great memories I remember about Doug.....

1983.......he was my western Michigan trainee that ran my frozen food. He did a great job 
Early 1990’s....playing basketball at 6 am at some gym on 25 th ave by our Jewel headquarters. Doug had the most unusual lay up. It always made me laugh but he mostly made the shot. 
The smile on his face when I lifted the Stanley cup over my head when it was brought to Itasca. I still blame Hancock’s daughter for giving me the ok to do it only to be scolded by the Stanely Cup guy.

He was a great guy who never changed as he came up the ranks. 

I am very sorry for your loss.



My heart breaks for the Cygan Family and Doug’s loved ones. I’ll never forget the endless neighborhood summer days and nights with Doug, his brothers and all the Emerald Avenue crew...well at least until the porch light came on! Countless hours of catch in the front yard, kick the can and ditch it, we had the best childhood.

Doug was always a loving and caring man. He enjoyed to laugh and make others laugh as well. He would always sing to the new catchy song like Chains by Nick Jonas or 24k Magic by Bruno Mars. Doug would attend all of Mitch’s  basketball games which I happened to play on the same team as him.  He always sat court side right across from our bench not to be the dad but to be our coach. He was the loudest throughout the entire gym and made sure his voice was heard, kind of like that voice in your head and now will be the voice in our hearts. He made a huge impact on my life and treated me as if I  was his own by inviting me to all the family holidays and gatherings. I’ll never forget what you’ve done for me. You always told me “Work hard and your time will come , I did my first 2 years at CLC and look at me now. If you’re the hardest worker and most dedicated they can’t say anything to you” and I live by those words everyday.  Forever in our hearts , love you Doug. 

Cygan family,

I am sorry I did not have the pleasure to meet Shonna.  My connection to Doug is a story of 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon.  My daughter is friends with his niece Jessica and we know Scott and Charlene and their other kids.  We also know his cousin Jason and his family, that is how we first discovered the connection.  I was talking with Doug's mom and dad at a birthday party at Jason's house for one of his kids and an ornament that Jess made came up in conversation and that is how we connected the dots with Marie.   Such a small world when you think about the random connection of how we meet.  Marie and Dick raised a good man and his love of family showed thru his kids and then when you came into their lives it was even more love to share.  

We are thinking of the entire Cygan family and hope fond memories comfort you in your time of need.  

As everyone else that I am shocked and sad at the passing of Doug.  Doug was both a friend and business confidante.  He was always available to discuss both business or just lend a open hear to a friend.  He was always giving of himself to others and truly was a man of the people.  He never held himself higher then his team or broader business community.  Doug was such a proud father and husband as he always was excited to share the current on goings of his beautiful family.  He always held a humorous story about the current status of the very busy Cygan household.  His heart was always directed to be helping others and his community not because of his role or title but because of whom he was.  His genuineness was such a towering attribute.
The entire greater Chicagoland community has lost a great business leader but also a great friend, husband, and father.
The Stis family will continue to pray for the entire Cygan family.


I've been working in Education for 18+ years and I'll be the first to admit that whenever our 8th grade students that were going to Stevenson would make a rude comment to be disrespectful to the other students who were going to Mundelein, I would stand up with pride and say..."Hey, I went to Mundelein High School, Class of 1981! I have classmates who work for NASA, are accomplished attorneys, Presidents, Vice Presidents, and CEO's of large companies, successful artists, musicians, talented tradesmen and craftsmen who now run their own businesses, and numerous other friends from all walks of life who may have struggled through the years, but have since matured to show their strengths, resiliency, leadership skills, and are now truly making a difference to the lives of others! So, Stevenson is no better than Mundelein because the opportunity to succeed is not contingent on the school, but the willingness of the student to want to succeed!"

Well, sadly this week the Class of 1981 lost another one of the good guys. Doug was an inspiring leader of hope and perseverance. A shy, quiet, & respectful student who always exceeded expectations. Who could laugh at mistakes, but always listened to learn. He was a collaborator and comforter. He understood the troubles of a little guy, yet shared his enthusiasm with the achievers.

The moral of the story to my students is that it really doesn't matter what school you attend...it matters how good you are as a person and if you are willing to progress and enjoy whatever journey you choose to take in life. And when you leave this planet, make sure your name lingers for a good reason. 

Heart hugs to all my friends on the loss of our classmate(s) but on a bright note, the sky sparkles brighter with the shimmer of so many angel wings. 👼🏻...."ever forward, onward always, faithful, truthful, full of spirit...hear our battle cries" 

God bless Doug, his family, and all who know that his name will linger proudly in our hearts. 

When Doug came into Shonna’s life his long arms scooped her up and drew her close to his side along with Mitch and  Taylor . They already knew they had the greatest dad ever for they were already under the umbrella of  love and positivity.  Then one by one those long arms gently reached out to  Lexie,  Kyla, Tim, and Ryan.  Their  success became his success .   His encouragement and God  given people skills blended this family into a loving  bunch!  It was easy, he was doing a  fun life activity with his best friend Shonna.   Who wouldn’t want to be brought in with those long arms under Doug’s umbrella.  I hear it rains and snows a lot in Chicago.  But through those storms he sheltered  and grew his family to be awesome  young people.   Those long arms will never let you go.  He has left you a legacy of love , character,  positivity and  memories  that will keep you sheltered  under his umbrella your entire lives.   You may not realize it yet,   but his arms will  still and always  have a long reach for each of you .  My sincere condolences .   I share in your loss .  Aunt  Karen

It all started for me in  1984 at 6120 in Crystal Lake ...... Thank you Doug for always being so nice and being the PERFECT example of customer service. Leading with an open heart and a smile that would light up a room... Doug extended unconditional trust....inspiring others to reach for the stars and to fulfill their destiny. Doug made a difference in the lives of others...leading with optimism,  authenticity and a sheer "will to win."  I am blessed to have known him, humbled to have partnered with him in business and most importantly honored to call him my friend. 
To the Cygan Family... Doug was a special leader who made it very clear that his #1 priority was the love of his Family.

My condolences go out to the entire family ... Doug was a very special leader, friend, family member and carrying person that will be greatly missed.  I have many memories of Doug as a partner in the business that I can truly share helped shape me into how I lead and work with others.   Doug we will greatly miss your friendship and partnership ... your legacy will be lasting across the industry for centuries as you impacted so many.

I can only pray for you and your family during this difficult time and that the Good Lord wraps his arms around all of you.
