A personality so dynamic and exhilarating it made his presence larger than life. A smile so vibrant and electric it brightened every room he entered. A beautiful soul whose spirit radiated love, whose heart was open to all, and on whose shoulders one could always rest their burdens.
This is who the world lost when Benjamin Bojrab-Recht passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home on Friday, May 31, 2024, his loyal dog Jasper at his side.
Born and raised in Fort Wayne, IN, Ben possessed a talent for beautifying spaces through interior design; a talent only surpassed by his ability to keep his soulmate, Matt, forever truly, madly, deeply in love with him (a love that was sealed for all time with a wink from Ben in the parking lot of Azar’s at the end of their second date). Soulmates since 1994 and officially married when legally possible in 2014, Ben and Matt had a love that was real, raw, ethereal, and eternal. Throughout their 30 years together that saw them spend time in Indianapolis before making their home in Waukegan, IL, they walked hand-in-hand as they experienced all life had to offer: burdens and blessings; sorrow and happiness; loss and hope.
Once in Waukegan, Ben spent much of his time as a homemaker and caretaker to his father. When time permitted, you could usually find Ben out and about with his best friend, Ginger, whose granddaughters he loved to the moon and back. And on his way home, he would usually call to let Matt know that he got “sucked into a vortex,” which means he was rummaging through a thrift store somewhere trying to find hidden treasures (for which he had an uncanny knack). And 2,000 miles was not enough to keep him apart from his sister, Cassie, who occupied a special place in his heart, and whose daily phone and video calls were a source of comfort and joy.
Benjamin was preceded in death by his mother, Brenda Ann Banister. He is survived by his husband, Matthew Bojrab-Recht; his father, Gary Bojrab; his sister, Cassandra Franklin; his half-sister, Cindy Adamek and her husband, Tim Murphy; his half-brother, Daniel Bojrab; his nephew, Darren Bojrab; his nieces, Mikaila Franklin and Leah Ferenchak; his great-nephew, Zaiden Bojrab; his great-niece, Alina Ferenchak; his best friends, Ginger Robertson and Kristine Smith; and his beloved fur babies, Jasper, Jasmine and ChiChi.
A visitation for Benjamin will be held Saturday, June 15, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Marsh Funeral Home, 305 North Cemetery Road, Gurnee, IL 60031.
Fueled by a belief in the inherent goodness of people and driven by a purpose to spread hope and joy, Ben made it his life’s mission to make the world a more beautiful place for all. Accordingly, in lieu of flowers or memorial contributions, a request on behalf of his family and friends: please remember that light that shone so brightly from Ben, smile, and pass it along. And when you do, keep an eye up in the sky -- you just might see Ben's light shining back down.
