He will be dearly missed by his beloved wife of 63 years, Shirley (nee Gruber), his three children: Janet (Dan Fitzgerald), Brian (Paula Dozzi), and Paul, as well as his seven grandchildren: Kevin, Ryan and Luke Fitzgerald, Alexis and Davis Bone, and Nathan and Avery Bone. He will be fondly remembered by his sisters, Lois and Brenda (Ted), and his sisters- and brother-in-law (Margie, Donna, and Bill), as well as his many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Charlie was born to a farming family in Brussels, Ontario. He left the farm to work at a car dealership in Wingham, Ontario in 1952, moving to the parts department at Roy Davis Motors in Guelph in 1954. Shortly thereafter, he became the parts manager at B&R Motors, and he continued his career as the manager of parts departments at John Stoddart Lincoln Mercury and Wellington Motors until his retirement in August 2000. In retirement, Charlie became a shuttle driver at Wayne Pittman Ford where he continued to enjoy the camaraderie and social connections of the car business.
Charlie was a hardworking and well respected “parts man” and through his work, he established many long-lasting friendships that persist to this day. He loved to golf, and was a long-time member of the Cutten Club, which held a special place in his heart. Over many rounds, he built strong and cherished friendships.
Charlie was an avid sports fan. He was a long-time season ticket holder to the Guelph Storm, and loved to watch sports on TV, especially golf, hockey, and baseball. He volunteered for several years with Guelph Minor Hockey, once serving as its President.
Above all else, Charlie was a proud and loving family man. He took great pleasure in and loved to share stories about the accomplishments and adventures of his children and grandchildren. There was nothing he enjoyed more than watching his own children, and then his grandchildren, participating in sporting or school events. He especially enjoyed summer cottaging when all the family was together sharing meals, games, and stories.
The family would like to offer our heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Hospice Wellington for their tremendous compassion and care, and to all the doctors, nurses, and PSWs, who consistently provided such dedicated and excellent care for Charlie.
