At the age of two days old, she was adopted in Toledo, Ohio by Gottlieb Washington Harman and Mildred Bower Harman. Both parents are deceased. At college, she met Ray Alvin Rosenthal and after graduation, they married June 16, 1962, at St. Jacob’s Lutheran Church in Anna, Ohio. He is in residence at Norwich Springs Health Campus.
She is also survived by children Kimberly (Lance) Kuhn, Christine (Steven R.) Hungler, Buneka (Chris) Lucas, foster son Rev. Ted (Diane) Kerr. Grandchildren include Emily Kuhn, Abigail Kuhn, Samuel Kuhn, Austin Hungler, Jake Hungler, Josh Hungler, Jackson Bialecki, Shelby Lucas, Sydney Lucas, Seth Lucas, honorary grandchildren Erica (Rob) Gillette, and Nate Deka. Also included in the family are three honorary great-grandchildren.
Janet spent most of her life in Ohio, graduating from Sydney High School, Sydney, Ohio, in 1958. She was active in school, was a member of National Honor Society and went to Buckeye Girls State. As a participant in 4H, she was grand champion with her horse, Lady. She sold Lady’s foals each year to earn money to go to college. She also enjoyed playing the violin and piano.
Attending Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, she majored in elementary education and obtained her Bachelor of Science in Education. She was a Resident Assistant and in her senior year, was chosen as a co-holder of the Women’s Residence Government Outstanding Senior Woman Award. The award was the first time in the school’s history and was based on scholarship, citizenship, leadership and service.
After marriage, Ray went on to seminary and during his senior year there, they were resident hall directors for Schaff Hall. His ministry was mainly at Ohio churches though they did spent a few years in Kentucky. Janet, with her welcoming smile, was always active in church, in choir, and teaching Sunday School. She went on Mission trips to Mexico with St. John’s Lutheran Church, Grove City. She was president of Camp Frederick Board in Rogers, Ohio , and Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Organization, a member of Kiwanis International and President of her Kiwanis Club several terms.
Wherever they lived in Ohio, she was a teacher…in Columbus City Schools, Massillion City Schools, Liberty Township Schools and at Southwestern City Schools. She also went on to obtain her Master’s Degree in Reading Recovery, in 1996.
To relax, Janet enjoyed decorating gingerbread houses and cookies with her grandchildren and traveling, sometimes with teacher friends during spring break to Ft. Meyers. Other enjoyments included gardening, sewing doll clothes and dresses for her granddaughters, and making graduation quilts. Each summer, there was family vacation time at Lakeside, Ohio.
