Charles E. "Chuck" Roope

Charles E. “Chuck” Roope, 84, passed away on January 11, 2024, surrounded by family, in his hometown of Grove City, Ohio. In his battle with various medical issues in recent years, Chuck showed courage and strength until the very end. Chuck was the oldest son of seven children born to Eliza and Guy Roope in Dublin, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Anna Jane Roope, Jerry Roope, and John Roope. He is survived by his sisters, Reatha Duncan, Myrna Holland, and Linda Roope-Shields.

In 1956, Chuck graduated from Dublin (VA.) High School, where he was affectionately known as Chub. After graduation, Chuck proudly served his country in the Navy on a destroyer from 1956-1960. After the Navy, he attended The Ohio State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1964.

Chuck met the love of his life, Esther, at a gathering where they were both on dates with other people. In 1968, he married Esther Roope (née Heitkamp), and they were married for 55 years. They loved to travel and experience life together. They had two children, whom he supported in all their endeavors. He adored his grandchildren and loved to spend time in their company. He will be dearly missed by Esther, his son Jeff Roope (Nicole), daughter Kristen Roope Sears (Mike), and his four grandchildren: Noah, Mabry, Madeline, and Charlie.

Chuck had a life-long passion for playing and watching sports, especially golf. He was a season ticket holder for Ohio State football for 50 years and could often be found tailgating before the games. Chuck was also thrilled to be selected as a patron for the Masters Tournament and cherished the pair of badges he received annually. When Chuck retired as an Underwriting Supervisor at Gates McDonald after 31 years, he worked as an usher at the Schottenstein Center, where he relished taking in as many high school and college sporting events as possible.

Chuck enjoyed reading and took an interest in history. This appreciation for the past took his family to many historic places, especially battlefields from the Civil War. They saw so many historic sites during their travels that his children once mistook the open green space of a highway patrol station as another battlefield.

His family would like to thank caregiver and friend Bridget Adams, Transitions Hospice, and all those who have played a role in his care and comfort these past years.

Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 23 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 3730 Broadway Grove City, OH 43123. Luncheon reception at the church to follow.
