Nell Marie Davenport passed away peacefully on July 1, 2024 on her 92nd birthday. Nell was born in Hollis, Oklahoma on July 1, 1932 to Tom and Pearl Vaughan. Nell attended Oklahoma College of Women and married James (Tommy) Thomas Davenport on May 2, 1953. Nell and Tommy spent the early years of their marriage in Oklahoma and Montana before settling in Midland, TX in 1968 for the next 54 years.
Nell loved traveling, needlepointing, swimming, reading, cooking, and spending time with her friends and family. She completed her undergraduate and graduate degrees at Texas Tech University and taught home economics at Midland High School and Robert E. Lee High School for 25 years. Nell was an active member of Fannin Terrace Baptist Church, the American Association of University Women, the retired Midland teacher’s group, and her book group.
Nell was the proud mother of two children, Becky Lynn Davenport and James Thomas Davenport Jr. She was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, James (Tommy) Davenport, her son James Thomas Davenport, and her brother and sister-in-law Gordon and Mary Katherine Vaughtan. She is survived by her daughter Becky (Jack Jensen); grandchildren, Severin Thomas Jensen and Bradley Baertsch Jensen; and nieces and nephews Donald Vaughn (Jackie), Carolyn Sexton (Roy), and Stephan Vaughan (Sheryl) .
A memorial service will be held in Midland, Texas later this summer. Donations may be made in memory of Nell Davenport to The Medical Team Hospice: Honoring Life’s Journey, or a charity of your choice.
