March 31, 1931 – October 7, 2024
Our beloved mother of nine cherished children has passed peacefully into God’s care. She was a devout Catholic her entire life, marrying Robert Emmett Gainer at Our Lady Good Counsel in 1950. Within the first six years of marriage, they produced their first five children. After a short respite two more followed, and after another short respite two more. The family was beautifully raised and schooled on the east side of Detroit in St. Matthew’s parish, then St. Clare’s. After successfully getting all nine started on their own careers and marriages, she worked as a switchboard communications operator at Bon Secours Hospital in Grosse Pointe, a job she loved and was loved by fellow workers. In 1986, Jeanne and Robert moved to St. Clair Shores, a home where countless holidays, parties and life celebrations were held as the family blossomed to include 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren (soon to be 13). Mom was the proud and consummate mother/grandmother/great-grandmother of all of them.
We are eternally grateful for Annette O’Connell, Shannon Wilson and Jeanna Bennette, who lovingly provided comfort and compassionate care in mom’s final two and a half years. And our cousin Liz Ensing and Danielle Gainer who spent many nights with mom, sharing memories all the family’s good times.
Mom was preceded in death by her husband Robert Emmett in 2010; Her parents Mildred and Anthony Fischl; And sisters Ruth, Marcella Haney, Betty Renel, and Toni Warren.
Her survivors include children: Denny Gainer and Sandra Block; Thomas Gainer; Jane (Gainer) and Patrick O’Brien; Jennifer (Gainer) and Denny O’Brien; Janice (Gainer) and Bob Konen; Matthew Gainer; Robert Gainer and Patti Tucker; Ginger Gainer and Sam Nazari; Jessie (Gainer) and Justin Miller. And one surviving brother Jack Fischl.
