Jim graduated from Howe Military Academy before attending Eastern Michigan University, where he received his Bachelors of Arts degree. After college, Jim started his professional role as a communications consultant. It was there he met the love of his life, Judy Herbst, and were married in 1979. After the death of Judy's father, Jim assumed the role of helping raise Judy's sister, Peggy Schlicker. After his wife Judy purchased the Sidney Bogg Chocolate Company, he left his communication position to help run it. While managing the chocolate company, James and Judy hired an ambitious young man, Maher Waad, after over twenty years turned into a surrogate son for them both.
Jim’s true love, other than Judy, was sailing. His father, Wilfred shared his love of sailing with James at a very young age. He loved being on the water, and sharing his love of sailing with those he cared about. He was an active member of the Detroit Yacht Club and was awarded the title of “the Man of the Day” during his membership. It was at the Detroit Yacht Club that James was instrumental in organizing the sailing classes they offered. He also was a regular guest at the Lockmoor Country Club.
His loving wife of over 40 years, Judy McGuire; his two brothers, Larry and Bill McGuire; and a surrogate son, Maher Waad, survive him. Numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, extended family and close friends, also survive him.
Aside from his loving parents, two brothers, Marty and Tom McGuire, preceded James in death.
