George P. Shammas, age 91, died peacefully at home on Monday, October 24, 2022. George was born in Detroit on January 6, 1931, the son of Philip and Adele Shammas. He grew up in Detroit, and graduated from Denby High School. George attended Michigan State University before enlisting in the Air Force and serving in the Korean War.
In 1957 George Shammas married the love of his life, Mary Mahfood, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kingston, Jamaica. The young couple settled in Grosse Pointe Woods and George became a senior executive of his family's business S & G Food Brokerage. After S & G was sold George started Shammas Brokerage which he ran until he retired at 81.
George was an active member of his community, belonging to both Kiwanis and Rotary. George was also a member of the Grosse Pointe Senior men’s club and a volunteer at Beaumont hospital. George loved to play golf, go boating on Lake St. Clair, follow politics and spend time with his family. George is survived by his two sons, Gary Shammas (Mary) and Roger Shammas (Kim); his three grandchildren, Brittany (Fiancé Collin Bowling), Madelayne and Nikkolas and his four siblings, Violet Mahfood, Robert Shammas (Elizabeth), Florence Mourad and Richard Shammas (Kathy), and many other members of a loving family. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, his parents, and his sister Janet.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Friday, November 18, 2022 at St George Orthodox, 2160 E Maple Rd. Troy MI. Archpriest Joseph Antypas will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Food for the Poor, 6401 Lyons Road; Coconut Creek, FL 33073 would be appreciated.
