David was born in Springfield, Ohio to John and Mary Kohl on November 21, 1947. After graduating Southfield High School in 1966, David attended Michigan State University for 2 years then joined the VISTA Peace Corps for 2 years after which he continued at MSU until graduating in 1972. He then attended the Detroit College of Law, from which he graduated with a Juris Doctorate in Law in 1975. David was a member of the Student Senate in law school and it was there where he met the love of his life, Chrysanthe. They married in 1977 and David embraced his new large Greek family and Greek Orthodox faith. David opened his own practice as a litigator and trial attorney and earned a reputation for being a fair and honest attorney. He pursued law to help people. He served on the Attorney Grievance Commission, was on the Representative Assembly, and was a mediator and a facilitator.
David was an awesome father, friend and mentor to his three children and he took an active role in turning their interests into lifelong passions. David observed and nurtured his children's curiosities by getting involved and showing encouragement. David told the most imaginative bedtime stories, built the most amazing forts, sandcastles, Legos and trains and turned bike rides into full-blown adventures. He was a coach, set builder, Scout Cub Master, camp counselor and Sunday School teacher. David loved drawing cartoons, videotaping family functions, making milkshakes, riding motorcycles, snapping polaroids, playing with babies and children, personalizing lyrics to songs, golfing, and taste-testing chocolate. David was an avid volunteer; he was a mentor to at-risk youth and for children who lost a parent.
David is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Chrysanthe A. Kotsis Kohl. Lovingly remembered by his children Becky Marie Kohl-Gomez (Paco), John David Kohl (Jennifer), and Rachael Elizabeth Kohl. Beloved brother to Jim Kohl (Judy), Karen Carney (Kevin), Barb Kingsland (Steve), Marcia Ouchakof (Boris), and Beverly Kohl. Grandfather/Papou to Ethan, Henry, Gabriel, William, Issac, Elizabeth, and Olivia. Beloved Godfather to Alexia Andoni, Renee Kotsis Clemons, and Paula Thomas King and a cherished Uncle to many.
