Steven Wayne Brown

May 29, 1955 – August 25, 2020

Steve was an athlete and an avid fan of every sport. He was born in Portland to Bill and Sharon (Brown) DeSmet. He attended Centennial High School and graduated from Gresham Union High School in 1973. While in high school he met Steve Prefontaine and always said Pre was his inspiration to start running. Steve graduated from the University of Phoenix in 2004 with degrees in business marketing and business management.

After high school, Steve played baseball, soccer, football and played on both men’s and co-ed softball teams. He completed several marathons including the Seaside marathon in OR, the Honolulu and the Maui marathons in HI and many other road races in the region. He was an Oregon Ducks Football season ticket holder. Steve loved playing golf and participated in the Pacific Amateur Golf Classic for many years as well many OGA events including the partner series every year. He also was a volunteer marshal at pro-tour events in the area. Steve enjoyed entertaining (and cooking for) friends and family for Super Bowl parties and holidays. He always enjoyed his annual trip to Maui for golf and sunshine, and loved going to Spring Training baseball games in AZ.

After various jobs including US Bank and Pizza Hut, Steve worked for the Portland cable companies; Rogers through Comcast, briefly for United Airlines and then retired after more than 10 years working at the Nike Employee Store/Warehouse in Beaverton.

Steve died peacefully in the afternoon with family at his side after more than 5 years living with ALS (Lou Gehrig ’s disease). He is preceded in death by his parents, and survived by his three brothers, Kenny, Kevin and Jim, his daughter and son-in-law Vicki & Jason Dugan, three grandchildren, Erika, Hunter & Cole, and by his wife of almost 40 years, Teresa.

He is well-remembered by many good friends. We will miss his crooked smile, generosity, sense of humor and sheer joy in living and doing. A celebration of life will be held post-Covid restrictions.
