February 10, 1925 – October 29, 2017
Maggie was born February 10, 1925 seven miles east of Gresham, Oregon to Stephen Baxter Splawn and Willie Logan Rushing Splawn. She was the sixth of the seven Splawn siblings who grew up in the Gresham and Troutdale area. The Splawns were an industrious family who worked in the timber industry, farmed, owned a restaurant in Troutdale --- the “Pup Grill” --- fished for smelt in the Sandy River, worked in the shipyards, and provided carnival food service across Oregon and Washington.
She was a proud member of the 1944 graduating class of Gresham Union High School, and thoroughly enjoyed her regular lunch meetings with her classmates. Maggie married Harvey Burnham Crowder in March of 1946, and traveled across the United States, following his career as a Naval Warrant Officer; they later divorced. Maggie moved back to Gresham, living with her sisters Lola and Edna, and brother Floyd at the big old white house on NW First Street. That house, filled with love, served as a family meeting place, a stopping over spot for the summer carnival crews, and a place of refuge for numerous family and non-family members alike. Maggie was a housekeeper extraordinaire; she was a housekeeper and friend for numerous families across Gresham and Portland area. When she finally retired, she served as her sister Lola’s caregiver until Lola’s passing, and was an active member of the Gresham and Troutdale Historical Societies.
Maggie is survived by her two son’s families: Alan Ray and his spouse Julie of Auburn, Washington, and Harvey Raymond and spouse Christine of College Place, Washington; six grandchildren Stephen, Portland, Oregon; Mathew, Leyland, Lancashire, United Kingdom; Elizabeth Petchey, Broughton, Lancashire, United Kingdom; Ethan, Kent, Washington; Mark, Provo, Utah; and Ruth, Orem Utah; nine great children in the United Kingdom, Washington, and Oregon; and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Ruth Mae, Mary Lola, and Edna Faye; brothers Floyd B, Stephen Baxter, and Raymond Ellis Merle.
The Crowder boys would like to thank the staff of the Good Samaritan Society Fairlawn Village, Silvia’s, Arne and Cindie Mauroni, and Linda Wright for providing friendship and care in her final years.
Contributions in Maggie’s honor can be made to the Gresham Historical Society.
