John Lawrence Treviso, age 88, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 24, 2015 in Portland, Oregon. John was born on June 18, 1927, in Chicago, Illinois, to his parents: Nick and Elsie (Rose) Treviso.
John served in the United States Navy from 1945 until 1948. He then enlisted in the United States Coast Guard from 1948 until 1952. Upon his honorable discharge he received the Americana Area Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, World War II Victory Ribbon, and the Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal.
John met the love of his life, Marion E. Kirkwood, on a blind date, in Chicago, Illinois. During their courtship, John was stationed in the Pacific, on French Frigate Shoals, where he collected seashells to give Marion when he returned home. They married on July 2, 1953, moving to Gresham, Oregon on their honeymoon. They were married 58 years until her passing in 2011. John was a devoted husband and father, together John and Marion raised five children, Susan, Jim, Jean, Kathleen and John Nelson. They shared a lifetime of love, respect, caring and happiness. The seashells John collected for Marion are still displayed in their home, evidence of the long lasting love they shared.
John opened the Oregon City Sweet Shoppe in 1962, followed by purchasing Milwaukie Popkorn and Candyland years later. John and Marion worked happily, side-by-side, hand-crafting caramel corn, cheese corn and confections for over 28 years. John had a kind, quiet, friendly personality that shinned through everything he did. His strong work ethic, honesty and commitment made him a success as a businessman.
John enjoyed his family. He was content to sit in the background and absorb the chatter and chaos of family gatherings. He could fix anything that broke, always happy to mend a treasured item, appliance or necessity. He loved to play cards with friends, dine at a handful of local restaurants and most of all, travel with Marion. John’s favorite adventures included, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, Washington, the East Coast, Canada, China and Panama.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Marion; and their son, James (Jim) Treviso. He is survived by his children, Susan Roisom (Dan), Jean Myers (Jeff), Kathleen Blakley (Les), and John Treviso (Maggie); 9 grandchildren, Amber Scott, Briana Treviso, Brad Blakley, Emily Blakley, Holly Blakley, Natalie Myers, Garrett Myers, Justin Roisom & Danielle Roisom and great grandchild, Brooklin Scott.

This poem is in honor of John and the life that he lived:
Silent Strong Dad
He never looks for praises
He's never one to boast
He just goes on quietly working
For those he loves the most
His dreams are seldom spoken
His wants are very few
And most of the time his worries
Will go unspoken too
He's there.... A firm foundation
Through all our storms of life
A sturdy hand to hold to
In times of stress and strife
A true friend we can turn to
When times are good or bad
One of our greatest blessings,
The man that we call Dad.
