William Dillard "Button" Slate

William Dillard “Button” Slate, 76, a longtime resident of Pocola, Oklahoma passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 in his home. He was a retired self-employed truck driver. He was born on September 14, 1945 in Huntington, Arkansas to Alfred Slate and Locilla Needham Slate.

He is survived by his wife, Triven Slate; children, Rebecca Downs (Shawn), Matthew Slate, Laura Fout (Chris), Josh Posey (Trish) and Callie Wyatt (Zach); ten grandkids and four great grandkids; his brothers and sisters, Viviene Cumbie, Sharion Kay Trantham, Maryann Stringer, Carol Lynn, Leonette Hammons, Dennis Smith, Dedria Pettus, Nina Goodner and Lisa Buckner. William was preceded in death by his father and mother, Alfred and Locilla; brothers, Danny Slate, Darriell Slate, Johnny Lynn, Richard Walton; and sister, Linda Lynn.

William was an avid motorcycle enthusiast, collector, and rider. He also had a deep passion for classic automobiles from the 50’s. Perhaps his greatest love was traveling. There wasn’t a day that went by that he didn’t have the atlas in his hands planning that next big adventure. He lived a very full life and always tried to offer the best advice to you based on his many life experiences. He maintained a sound mind until his passing, which was always important in his eyes. He will be remembered for his simple style, unfailing work ethic, entertaining stories, and his love for his family. In his later years, time presented him with a softness we treasured. The family wishes to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and support.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Thursday, June 9 at McConnell Funeral Home Chapel in Greenwood. Viewing will be Wednesday from 2 – 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Taylor Slate, Mark Stringer, Mark Cumbie, Topper Cumbie, Larry Maden, and Jim Decker. Honorary pallbearers will be Carol Barnes, Archie Hutchens and George Balster.
